Doctor Who Season 13 will have a shorter episode order than has become normal

Are you ready for The Doctor and her fam to come back to your TV screen? It’s been a long wait for new episodes of Doctor Who but that wait is getting closer to ending.

Doctor Who Season 13 has officially started filming. The Doctor is back in the TARDIS. At least, we hope she is!

Fans will remember that the 12th season finale left The Doctor locked in an eternal prison. Her friends have no idea where she is, believing that she’s left them behind—made the choice for them that they’re not coming back on any more trips.

That’s not the case, and hopefully, they’ll learn that during the holiday special, which was confirmed and teased at the virtual NYCC 2020. There’s still no official date for the special, but it’s going to be sometime during the holiday season. Christmas Day? New Year’s Day? We’ll bring that news when we have it.

Hopefully, it ends with The Doctor’s friends finding out where she is and getting her out of that eternal prison.

That leads us into Doctor Who Season 13.

A shorter number of episodes this season

British dramas are known for being on the shorter side. There aren’t the 22-episode orders that we traditionally see. Doctor Who tends to be between 11 and 14 episodes. During Chris Chibnall’s era, it’s 11 episodes per season and that was the plan for Season 13.

That’s not happening. Due to COVID-19 restrictions on set, it’s going to take longer to complete each episode. Instead of rushing or extending, the episode order is being reduced from 11 to eight.

Yes, that is a short season. For most British dramas, it’s actually around an average length. Doctor Who was usually above normal. It’s going to feel more like a Netflix or Amazon show!

In an official press release, Chibnall gave us a little tease for the season:

But rest assured, the ambition, humor, fun and scares you expect from Doctor Who will all still be firmly in place. For everyone around the world, this is a challenging period – but the Doctor never shirks from a challenge!
