The Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 premiere took us on a rollercoaster of a ride

The Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 premiere opened in the middle of the pandemic, but offered flashbacks throughout the two hours. There was a lot happening, but some moments stood out more than others.

There are spoilers in this post from the Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 premiere. You can catch up on Hulu if you haven’t seen it yet.

More from ABC

We caught up with where the main couples were throughout the two hours. Some of the footage was clearly filmed just before the production shutdowns earlier in the year, while other footage was from the summer and fall months. We didn’t just see Meredith and Bailey dealing with the pandemic, but found out Baby Lincoln’s name, saw Maggie and Winston getting to know each other more, and caught up with the Owen/Teddy drama.

This isn’t going to make the moments, but I do want to say I’m glad the show brought closure to the trafficking storyline from the previous season. This was the moment we saw that DeLuca was struggling with his mental health, but he saw something everyone else was too blind to see. And that paid off in the premiere.

Here are the five biggest WTF moments from the Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 premiere.

Owen talking about his will

Owen ended Season 16 hearing Teddy and Koracick hooking up. The entire hospital knows about it, and everyone has chosen sides—they’ve chosen Owen’s side.

However, Owen isn’t dealing very well. During the episode, he mentioned his will to Teddy, saying he couldn’t figure out whether Leo would be best with Teddy or Amelia. Where did this come from? Is Owen thinking about re-enlisting in the military? Is he leaving and never returning?

There was a mention that someone was doing to die in the intended Season 16 finale. Was the intention to kill Owen off?

Also, I have to quickly mention the fact that he talked about cheating on Cristina. He did it on purpose because he hated Cristina and wanted to hurt her. I think that’s really the first time we’ve heard him completely acknowledge his hate for Cristina at her time of need.

Jackson and Jo hooking up

Next up we have the relationship we never saw coming. It’s not really a relationship. Jo wanted a sexy favor from Jackson. Literally a sex-y favor for Jackson.

She has no idea how to be single, but she wanted to hook up with someone in a safe way. Jackson was the person she turned to.

The hookup didn’t quite go as planned. She ended up crying on Jackson’s shoulder and they were both embarrassed after. They’re friends again, though. Is this relationship going to go anywhere else?

Richard and Catherine getting back together

Jackson wasn’t just involved in Jo’s storyline. We got flashbacks of him getting Webber out of his slump after the cobalt poisoning. Catherine naturally came up.

Something Jackson pointed out was that Webber and Catherine were both horrible to each other at times. Catherine more so, but Webber made some terrible decisions, too. Jackson thinks they are both right for each other and love each other, though.

The ending to the Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 premiere saw Richard say he wanted to get a COVID test, and Catherine should to. They need to make sure they’re both negative so they can bubble together.

Bailey keeping her OCD under control

This WTF moment is a good WTF moment. One thing I wondered when hearing that the show would feature a pandemic storyline was how Bailey would cope. Would her OCD take control?

Nope! She kept control of her OCD. In fact, she used it to her advantage, getting the hospital in a way that would keep patients and doctors safe.

She got a little over the top with Webber, but that was expected. Overall, I was proud of her. I’m not Bailey’s biggest fan. There are seasons that I can do without her, but I’m proud of her during the Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 premiere.

Meredith collapsing in the parking lot

Finally, I can’t talk about the premiere without mentioning the ending. After a successful surgery, Meredith went back into the COVID ICU. DeLuca sent her home (or to a motel?) to sleep things off. However, she didn’t even make it to the car.

Hayes found Meredith in the parking lot on the ground. She’d collapsed, and we went inside Meredith’s mind where she’s with Derek on the beach. And yes, that was Patrick Dempsey back to film a scene. There’s more of that to come, but what does it mean for Meredith?
