Kate and Toby moved forward with adoption on This Is Us Season 5, Episode 3

Please note there are spoilers ahead for the Nov. 10 episode of This Is Us

On This Is Us Season 5, Episode 3, Kate and Toby would meet with a pregnant woman whose child they were hoping to adopt.

While their meeting would go better than expected, Toby, usually the optimist, would have reservations that he would express to Kate. Finally, a flashback would shed some light for the audience on Kate’s relationship with Toby. Let’s talk about what happened on Kate and Toby’s journey to adoption on Season 5, Episode 3 of This Is Us.

Kate and Toby want to give baby Jack a sibling

In the Season 4 finale, Kate and Toby would take a trip to the NICU of the Feliz Medical Center, where baby Jack had been born. While there, they would put his picture on the NICU’s Wall of Fame, and Toby would apologize to Kate for having not been the best version of himself that past year. He would then tell her that having watched her interact with her brothers over the years had made him realize the importance of having someone around to grow up with and lean on.

With that, he’d suggest they give baby Jack a sibling. Although he would understand Kate’s apprehension, with Jack’s birth having presented several complications, Toby would remind her that the Pearson family has a great track record with adoption. After leaving the hospital, both would agree that this would be something they wished to pursue.

Fast-forward to the Season 5 premiere, and Toby would get word the application they submitted to begin the process of adoption has been reviewed, and an expectant mother is wishing to meet them.

Kate is in love

At the beginning of Season 5, Episode 3, Kate and Toby would sit in a park in San Pedro, California, waiting to have a socially-distanced meeting with Ellie, the birth mother of their potential adopted child, and the mother of an eight-year-old named Willow.

Kate is immediately “smitten” with Ellie over their shared love of the Pittsburgh Steelers and popular culture, i.e., Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Ghostbusters.

She would tell them that after the birth of Willow, her husband had passed away from cancer. Fast-forward a few years later, and Ellie would decide to start dating again. Unfortunately, a first date would quickly turn into a one-night-stand, which would result in the ensuing pregnancy.

Is it too good to be true?

Despite the circumstances behind it, Ellie would assure Kate and Toby that she was making the right decision. Although Ellie would receive a call from her mother, letting her know that Willow was having a melt-down and needed to be picked up, Kate and Toby would offer to drive her home. On their way to the car, Kate would receive a text message from their babysitter, letting them know she couldn’t find diapers.

When Toby realized that he had left the diapers that Kate had bought the following day in the car, the two would have a spat.

However, their argument would be over in the blink of an eye, showing just how far they’ve come at being able to communicate their feelings appropriately.

They would later apologize for their behavior, but Ellie would assure them that you can tell a lot about a couple based on how they argue and how they recover from a fight.

Before saying goodbye, she would let them know that she had a good feeling about them.

Later that day, as Kate and Ellie texted back and forth, Toby would voice concern that Kate was becoming too attached to Ellie in a short period considering that Ellie could change her mind about them at any time. Considering that the promo for tomorrow night’s episode shows Ellie potentially ghosting them, adjusting their expectations may be the right course of action.
