If last week’s episode of This Is Us was about changes, then tonight’s episode will be all about honesty. When things start to get a little bit clearer for the Big Three, a surprise twist seems to come into their lives at an inopportune time.
The theme of the third episode revolved around family expansion. For Kate and Toby as well as Kevin and Madison, it’s pretty self-explanatory. Kate and Toby hit it off with a potential adoption match, Ellie. Both Kate and Toby shared how much they bonded with Ellie, but it was Toby who pointed out that they should proceed with some caution.

Speaking of expansion, Kevin and Madison both shared a revelation with each other. Much to the surprise of each other, they both battle physical and mental demons. Madison suffers from an eating disorder while Kevin battles alcohol addiction as well as the fight to stay fit. That being said, these revelations brought them closer together thanks to their honesty.
In terms of Randall’s family, here’s where things get tricky. We know that Randall’s mother, Laurel, did not die of a drug overdose at birth. However, it appears Laurel may have had a relationship with the Vietnamese man introduced during the episode. There was also a young girl who appears to be the man’s granddaughter. Reading between the lines, Laurel and the older man could have had a son or daughter, who birthed the young girl in the episode, which means Randall could have a half-brother or half-sister.
This Is Us Season 5, Episode 4 preview
The fourth episode is titled, “Honestly,” and teases some truthful reveals. Jack will look to inspire the young Big Three in the past. In the present, Kevin and his new director will spar over Kevin’s acting ability. Finally, Kate confronts Ellie as she’s having second thoughts about giving her baby up for adoption. No one ever said that honesty had to be good news!
