4 Mysteries to ponder from the NCIS Season 18 premiere
NCIS season 18 premiere provided plenty of mystery and questions to ponder
NCIS finally came back this week after months of waiting for its triumphant return! Before the hit CBS show was set to air, we already knew some details about what to expect in the upcoming season. Sure enough, the NCIS season 18 premiere did not hold back in providing us a glimpse into what has been going on with the team since we last saw them.
Not only that, but there was plenty of mystery and weirdness in the first episode back. From a missing body to the search for a drug dealer, there were some strange happenings in “Sturgeon Season.”
Here are four of the main mysteries that we saw in the first episode of season 18.

NCIS Season 18 premiere goes back in time
The episode starts off with a surprise twist. Before going back to November of 2019, it appears in March of 2020, Special Agent Tim McGee was in pursuit of an airplane for reasons unknown. Unfortunately for our senior special agent, he gets taken down by the person in the plane. But the surprise doesn’t end there!
It turns out the shooter is none other than our own Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Um, what is happening and why is he giving McGee an injury like this? That is quite a way to open the episode, but of course, we don’t know the story behind that since we quickly find ourselves four months into the past.
A mystery for Gibbs
After getting a new case, Gibbs leaves without a hint to the team as to why he is taking off. To explain where he is going when pressed, Gibbs mentions it is “sturgeon season” to Jack, as though he is going fishing. However, this is just a way for him to leave so he can come to Tobias Fornell’s aid. They follow a lead into who supplied drugs to his daughter, Emily.
It’s clear, though, that Fornell’s emotions as a father are compounding how he would respond normally in an investigation. While they have the name John Winston, they still need to figure out how to stop the person leading the drug ring. This is one mystery that won’t be solved so quickly. How will Gibbs help Tobias before he does something he can’t come back from?
Where’s the body?
Elsewhere in the episode, Jimmy Palmer has a mystery of his own. The body of Marine Corporal Richard Darby has disappeared from autopsy and when Jimmy’s own car is blown up, things get weirder. When he gets help from Agent Veronica “Ronnie” Tyler (Victoria Platt), who was working the case involving Darby’s death, it appears she might know more than she previously let on.
She also seems to be very involved with the team, especially Director Leon Vance, who refers to her as “family.” Could we see more of her in the future?
A missing child
As it turns out, a mysterious man threatened and kidnapped Tyler’s daughter, Jasmine, in order for her to obtain the victim’s right hand for reasons unknown. Other than the major ick factor in the team needing to come up with a hand (thanks Jimmy) to figure out who has the little girl, this aspect of the case showcased Nick Torres’ efforts to locate her.
For its first episode back, NCIS pulled no punches in getting right to the heart of the cases and setting up plots down the road. As of right now, we can only speculate where they are going with team and all they will go through this season.
The next episode will be the big milestone number 400 and will be yet another stop in time. It will follow Gibbs’s and Dr. Ducky Mallard’s first meeting and we get to see how their budding friendship began. Their younger selves will be portrayed by Sean Harmon and Adam Campbell, respectively.
So far, the first couple episodes of the season are shaping up to be good ones! What did you think of the NCIS season 18 premiere?
