The Teen Mom 2 star owes over $150,000 to Uncle Sam in unpaid federal and state taxes

There’s Sam’s Club, and then there’s the Uncle Sam Club. The problem with becoming a teenage reality star is that it’s a steep enough learning curve for anyone to be on TV and make money from multiple “businesses”, but the IRS stops for no one. Teen Mom 2 star Leah Messer owes over $155,000 to the IRS, and that’s not something that will go away any time soon.

According to The Ashley’s Reality Roundup, documents obtained by and reported on by The Sun show that Messer has a massive tax debt that includes $31,000 from a state tax lien she received over the summer.

Messer blames her financial trouble on being too generous, often loaning money to family and friends when she should be thinking twice about it. She claims to have paid her father tens of thousands of dollars just to keep him in her life, while also paying for cars and houses for other family members.

That’s a hefty amount of money to owe the IRS, but she’s not the first Teen Mom star (or reality star) to amass a great deal of tax debt. Catelynn Lowell, Jenelle Evans, Amber Portwood and Maci Bookout have all faced tax liens and trouble with the IRS over the years, with Lowell and her partner Tyler Baltierra owing a total of over $850,000.

Let’s be honest, here. This isn’t a coincidence, it’s a pattern of behavior that needs to stop for the welfare of everyone involved. When teenage reality stars sign on to shows like Teen Mom 2 they need to have people in place from the network to make sure that their cast is making good decisions. Sure, once they hit 18 they’re adults, but we should also consider that they’re on shows like Teen Mom because of their kids, and those kids deserve to be protected.
