Supernatural series finale: How did it end?
Breaking down the ending to the Supernatural series finale
The final ever episode of Supernatural aired on Nov. 19. There were tears. A lot of tears. But how did the Supernatural series finale come to an end?
The episode started with the Winchesters living life in the bunker with total free will. There was a pie competition, Sam got his runs in, everything seemed just perfect. Of course, that blissful feeling couldn’t remain.

A case popped up involving masked attacks and ripped out throats. It didn’t take too long to figure out the Winchesters were dealing with vampires. And not just any vampires. Jenny from Supernatural season 1 popped up (but didn’t last long).
Sadly, the first case would be the last for Dean Winchester. After being impaled on a long and sharp nail, he got a goodbye speech in and that was it. Sam would have to live on alone.
Would either Winchester survive the Supernatural series finale
While mourning for Dean (and all others lost), Sam walked into Dean’s room. ‘Dean’s “Other Other” Cell’ started ringing. Donna had passed a message to someone in Texas to get in touch with “Agent Bon Jovi” to deal with bodies with ripped out hearts
It seems the case went fine. Sam survived and we see flashes of him having a son named Dean and getting the chance to grow old.
Jack fixes Heaven
One of the best things to come out of the Supernatural series finale is finding out that Heaven has been fixed. Jack ripped down the walls with Castiel’s help.
It’s no longer about reliving memories. Bobby is there to share that everyone who has passed on now gets to spend time together. Mary and John don’t live that far away, meaning Dean gets to see them both again.
It’s almost perfect.
If you missed “Carry On My Wayward Son” at the very start of the Supernatural series finale, don’t worry. It was there in the episode. Dean jumped in Baby and went on a drive and the song started playing.
What happened to Sam?
In the end, we catch up with an old Sam in a bed surrounded by machines. His son Dean shows up to say “it’s okay.”
It’s exactly what Sam needs to hear, just like Dean did earlier in the episode. Sam dies of old age with his son, surrounded by photos of those he’s loved.
The Supernatural series finale ends the only way it could. Sam (young again) shows up on a bridge in Heaven behind Dean. The brothers are together again, and they get to spend eternity in Heaven with each other and everyone they have ever loved and lost.
While there was some clunky writing, this was a beautiful ending. And maybe it’s the softy in me, but I adore that Sam got to die of old age, especially since we got to see Jared Padalecki’s old man face.
