Kate made a Freudian slip on This Is Us Season 5, Episode 4

Please note there are spoilers ahead for the Nov. 17 episode of This Is Us.

On This Is Us Season 5, Episode 4, Kate would make a Freudian slip while attending Ellie’s  OB-GYB appointment. This slip would lead to a heart-to-heart conversation between the two that would reveal past trauma for both women.

Let’s talk about what happened with Kate this week on This Is Us Season 5, Episode 4.

This Is Us: Kate and Toby have baby fever

As the episode opened this week, we’d find Kate and Toby sitting at their kitchen table reviewing and getting ready to sign Ellie’s birth plan. Despite being overwhelmed, they would remind themselves that either party could back out at any time, and Toby would remind Kate that Ellie is the one who is really in control of the situation. However, Kate would remind him that Ellie had invited Kate to join her for her OB-GYN appointment that day, which Kate would take as a good sign.

We’d also find out that Kate and Toby had decided on a name for their potential adoptive child, “Chloe.” Later that day, Kate would sit in the OB-GYN office with Toby on FaceTime as Ellie got an ultrasound. As they watched the monitor, Kate would introduce Toby to baby Chloe, a Freudian slip that would elicit a shocked expression from Ellie.

As they left the hospital, Kate would apologize and ask Ellie if she was having second thoughts. To this, Ellie would tell her a story from when she was a teenager that involved her now-deceased husband and a mean girl named Chloe. She would then tell Kate that a few months prior, after learning that she was pregnant, she had considered getting an abortion.

However, she would get as far as the parking lot before realizing that it wasn’t the right decision for her. To answer Kate’s question, Ellie would say that while she’d had second thoughts her entire life, she did not doubt that she wants Kate and Toby to be the adoptive parents of her baby. With a sigh of relief, Kate would head home; however, something would clearly be weighing on her.

A call from Kevin would quickly turn to talk of Randall. Kate would end up telling Kevin about the conversation she’d had with Randall on their birthday regarding the difficulty he faced growing up as the only Black person in an all-white family.

Although Kevin was unsympathetic, feeling as though Randall had always been looked after by Jack and Rebecca, Kate urged him to be more sympathetic, telling him that there was baggage that they were all still carrying from childhood.

Although she would not reveal the sentiment behind that statement to Kevin, later that night, she would open up to Toby. In a flashback, we would learn that following her breakup with Marc, an abusive relationship that would appear to end upon Rebecca banishing Marc from Kate’s life, Kate would fall ill and be unable to attend Kevin’s acting showcase.

After saying goodbye to Rebecca, Kate would remove an ovulation test from her dresser, which detected that she might be pregnant.

How will Toby react to this revelation? Will it affect their feelings on moving forward with the adoption?
