Randall went viral on the Internet on This Is Us Season 5, Episode 4

A day shadowing Randall at city hall would go awry after a mishap made by Malik would find a live video of Randall going viral on This Is Us Season 5, Episode 4. By far, the biggest surprise would be who that video would end up reaching.

Let’s discuss how Randall went viral on This Is Us Season 5, Episode 4.

This Is Us: What could go wrong?

During the episode, Randall would find himself on top of the world after being selected by Malik to shadow for a civics assignment. Although Randall would be thrilled by the opportunity, Deja would be nervous at the prospect of her father and boyfriend spending a whole day together. Randall, enjoying Deja’s discomfort, would jokingly ask her, “What could go wrong?”

Randall and Malik’s relationship has been interesting to watch. In the season premiere, we’d see both of them have a heart-to-heart discussion about the murders of George Floyd and Jonny Gammage, respectively. It’s a far cry from where we were last season, with both Randall and Beth concerned about Deja’s involvement with Malik, who they’d learn was a teen father.

While Malik doesn’t need a surrogate father, Randall may play the role of mentor. However, as we saw, there’d be a few bumps in the road between them first.

Upon Malik’s arrival, six minutes past their plan to leave at 8:00 a.m., Deja would caution him to remain quiet.

Although excited to learn how the city runs, Malik would find himself quickly falling asleep while watching Randall and Jae-won discuss a motion about rent collection to bring in front of the council. Following the meeting, Jae-won would inform Randall that he had to attend a budget meeting later and would not be able to set up their daily community bulletin livestream.

Luckily, Randall, having just caught Malik sleeping, would decide to have him run it. After getting everything set so that Malik could run the stream from the next room, Randall would remind him to start and end the stream on cue. Although things would get off to a great start, Malik would soon get a call from his mother, letting him know that his baby daughter was having a meltdown.

Meanwhile, in his office, Randall would bid farewell to his audience and begin to undress and change into workout clothes to go for a jog. Unfortunately, he would be unaware that he was undressing in front of thousands of his constituents, the result of Malik stepping away from the computer to take his phone call.

Although, after getting a text from Deja letting him know what was happening, Malik would run to shut off the stream, it would be too late.

Later, Randall would admonish for not taking the work that he does seriously.

Malik is an interesting character because it’s very easy to forget that he’s an adolescent with adult responsibilities. He has to juggle a lot at such a young age that when he drops the ball, it can affect a future that he is just starting to build.

This is something that Malik would explain, telling Randall that the reason he was late that morning was that he had to get up at 4:30 a.m., a half-an-hour earlier than he usually does, to make sure his daughter was up and ready by the time he left.

He would say that while he respects what Randall does, his daughter always comes first, even at the expense of his dreams. Randall, realizing that he misjudged him, would tell Malik that after Jack died, he felt a need to make his dreams smaller and more practical for his family.

However, he would tell him that he was wrong and that Malik needed to make his dreams bigger, not despite his daughter but for her.

Following Malik’s explanation and apology, Randall would begin to understand what Malik is facing. Both men have been shaped by circumstances that made them have to grow up fast.

Although those circumstances are vastly different from one another, Randall understands that because their responsibilities changed, they both have lived their life under the assumption that their dreams had to be put on the back burner for a greater cause.

However, in his adulthood, Randall would begin to realize how much he’d deprived himself of for no good reason, and so he doesn’t want Malik to feel the same burden he did.

Luckily, Malik would thank him and say that the size of his dreams isn’t the problem; however, he would say that to make his dreams a reality, he would need a killer internship, preferably one at city hall. Luckily, Randall would tell him it could be arranged.

Despite having this heart-to-heart conversation, Randall would still have a fire to put out as moments after getting home, he would receive a call from Jae-won, letting him know that video of the live stream had been shared on social media and would likely make local and national news.

As the episode closed, Randall would scroll through the various memes that resulted from the livestream. Meanwhile, in another home somewhere in the world, an old man would be watching the video and would rewind at the mention of William.

As the camera zoomed in, we’d see that it was an older version of the man that we met just a few episodes ago, the man who once upon a time dated Randall’s mother, Laurel.

Although I’m skeptical about how the Laurel storyline will play out, I’ll admit I’m intrigued by how the writers are aiming to connect Randall and this mystery man to each other.
