2 – The Producers

What happens when a Broadway producer purposefully tries to create a terrible musical so that he can pocket the rest of the money that was raised to fund the show? Nothing goes as planned.

The Producers is an American musical comedy based on a film, but the version on Netflix is the 2005 movie musical that was based on the stage show. What makes this film adaptation unique is that it stars many cast members from the original Broadway cast like Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick.

3 – Jersey Boys

Jersey Boys is a jukebox musical following the rise of the 1960s rock and doo-wop group, Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. The show was an immediate hit and ran on Broadway from 2005 through to 2017.

Released in 2014, the movie adaptation was directed and produced by Clint Eastwood and stars John Lloyd Young (who originated the role of Frankie Valli on Broadway), Vincent Piazza, Michael Lomenda, and Erich Bergen as The Four Seasons.

4 – Fiddler on the Roof

One of the more serious musicals on Netflix, this 1971 film adaptation of Fiddler on the Roof came a few years after the Broadway show first opened in the mid-60s. Set in 1905 in Russia, the story follows Tevye, a religious man who is married with five daughters and who faces moral dilemmas from new influences as he tries to maintain his Jewish traditions and cultural customs.

As each of his older three girls falls in love and seeks approval for marriage, Tevye is challenged by whether he should listen to the customs and rules of his faith, or to his daughters’ wishes. The movie won three Academy Awards and includes cast members who played roles in the show on Broadway and the West End.
