Last month, The Stand officially aired on CBS All Access. And so far, the buzz surrounding this post-apocalyptic miniseries continues to grow, although some reviews have been notably mixed.

For those unfamiliar with the book version, The Stand is Stephen King’s longest novel and it’s often regarded as his masterwork. And so, there’s a lot for the latest adaptation to live up to. According to IndieWire, the miniseries simply doesn’t seem to have the time it takes to rank “anywhere near his best adaptations” when it’s all said and done.

In the end, pacing may prove to be an issue. The Rotten Tomatoes critics consensus says that despite an “A-list ensemble” and “a smattering of poignant moments,” The Stand‘s runtime “doesn’t make for better storytelling, leaving its expansive cast stranded in a cluttered apocalypse.” But until the finale, we can’t really know for sure, can we? Not to mention, there still could be more to come.

What is The Stand about?

Based on Stephen King’s best-selling novel, this miniseries takes place during a deadly pandemic. Great timing, right? In this bleak scenario, a weaponized and fatal strain of influenza almost wipes out the entire world population. The “stand” refers to those fighting back, standing up, and banding together against the external and internal forces wreaking havoc on society as it remains, and humanity as a whole moving forward.

The Stand cast

If you’ve seen the show, you know it’s got a great cast. It stars Alexander Skarsgard, Whoopi Goldberg, James Marsden, Amber Heard, Henry Zaga, Odessa Young, Alex Wolff, and a handful of other talented actors.

When does The Stand end?

The season finale will be released February 11, 2021 on CBS All Access. However, it’s not clear just how season 1 will come to a close. As Bustle points out, the original ending of Stephen King’s novel is somewhat “anticlimactic,” so there’s a chance this adaptation will take the opportunity to mix things up a bit.
