After a short hiatus, the Pearsons are back for more family drama as This Is Us Season 5 returns tonight for its first new episode in 2021. Although there have only been four episodes so far, Season 5 has provided the audience with multiple cliffhangers that will greatly shape the narrative of the show going forward.
There are three main themes of This Is Us Season 5: motherhood, pregnancy, and health. Firstly, the biggest reveal of Season 5 was the status of Randall’s birth mother, Laurel. Randall believed that his mother died in childbirth when that’s quite the opposite. Laurel survived and may still be alive. Laurel is not the only mother on the show as Kate is trying to become a mother for the second time via adoption.

Speaking of Kate, a pregnancy from her past will be a major topic of discussion. In the fourth episode, teenage Kate was holding a positive pregnancy test, and we can assume that her abusive on-and-off boyfriend Mark is the father. What happened next? We won’t have to wait long for answers as her conversation with Toby about her past pregnancy will be explained in this episode, according to the This Is Us producers.
Finally, there’s health, and more specifically, Rebecca’s health. It’s only a matter of time before Rebecca’s health severely deteriorates onscreen. The question is how long it takes before she ends up on her presumable deathbed in the flash forward with Uncle Nicky by her side.
This Is Us Season 5, Episode 5 preview
Tonight’s episode is titled, “A Long Road Home.” According to the official synopsis, each member of the Big Three will be featured. Kate will discuss her past pregnancy with Toby, Randall’s viral fame will lead to a new discovery, and Kevin must make an important decision about his future, both with his career and impending fatherhood.
