Is The Magicians Season 6 happening?

Will The Magicians Season 6 air on SYFY this January?

Mid-January is usually the time for a new season of The Magicians. Will there be a new set of episodes beginning soon? Is The Magicians Season 6 happening on SYFY?

Sadly, the answer is no. This isn’t because of the pandemic, either.

SYFY canceled the series after five seasons. While there were calls from many for other streaming services to pick the show up, that’s not happened.

Instead, Wednesdays will soon be taken over by a new series. You’ll want to look out for Resident Alien, especially if you love sci-fi comedies and Alan Tudyk.

What happened to The Magicians?

So, why isn’t The Magicians Season 6 happening?

Ratings dropped on SYFY. Despite the series being one of the only scripted shows left on the network, SYFY opted to cancel The Magicians partway through the fifth season.

The good news is the show didn’t have the major cliffhanger that previous seasons have had. As shows get to around the fourth and fifth seasons, showrunners are somewhat ready for cancellations to happen. That’s especially the case if the ratings start to drop.

John McNamara, Sera Gamble, and Henry Alonso Myers made the decision to create a season finale that could realistically work as a series finale if needed. It also had enough to run another season if it was picked up.

Sadly, it means no more epic musical numbers. Nobody can do musical numbers like McNamara.

You can now binge-watch all five seasons of The Magicians. And you know this is a series worth binge-watching once again.

One of the great things about the show is that it takes the Lev Grossman books but isn’t a direct recreation. Instead, it takes multiple plotlines from different books and combines them together. In some seasons, one particular small part of the story is used and expanded, such as the quest in Season 3.

The series will live on with its twists and turns, but there won’t be The Magicians Season 6.
