The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 4 just began production

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 4 has finally begun production, according to TVLine. While production on Season 4 should have started in Spring of 2020, like most shows, production got halted due to filming restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, in October, series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino told TVLine that production on Season 4 would have a January start date with the fashion department, set designers, and writers hard at work prepping.

While it might be a while before Season 4 comes to Amazon Prime, here’s everything we know about Season 4 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

The  Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 4 release date

With production on Season 4 just starting, a release date is unlikely to be announced for several months.

There is cause for concern that we will indeed be waiting a while for Season 4 to premiere, considering that Season 3 debuted on Amazon Prime a little over a year after Season 2.

Post-production is likely to take some time with this season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel using visual effects to make up for the large number of extras that the show usually has but cannot employ due to COVID-19 filming restrictions.

As Executive Producer Daniel Palladino told TVLine:

"“Last season, our premiere had 850 extras in an airplane hangar. We cannot do that.”"

As a result, we very well may not see Season 4 until 2022, especially if production gets halted again due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 4 cast

The most solid piece of information that we do have about Season 4 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is which cast members will be returning. Here’s the list of which cast members are returning so far:

  • Rachel Brosnahan as Midge Maisel
  • Alex Borstein as Susie Myerson
  • Michael Zegen as Joel Maisel
  • Marin Hinkle as Rose Weissman (Midge’s mother)
  • Tony Shalhoub as Abe Weissman (Midge’s father)
  • Kevin Pollack as Moishe Maisel (Joel’s father)
  • Caroline Aaron as Shirley Maisel (Joel’s mother)
  • Luke Kirby as Lenny Bruce

Stephanie Hsu, who played Joel’s new love-interest Mei Lin last season, will also be returning.

In a recent interview with Extra, Jane Lynch, who plays Midge’s rival and Susie’s latest client Sophie Lennon, hinted that she’d be returning, although in what capacity is unclear.

It’s also unclear whether Leroy McClain, who played fictional singer Shy Baldwin, or Sterling K. Brown, who played Shy’s manager, Reggie, will be returning.

As you may remember, Midge spent Season 3 working as the opening act on Shy’s tour until she accidentally outed him during a set and was promptly fired. While it’s unlikely Brown will be returning this season, seeing as Season 5 of This Is Us is currently in production, McClain may return, allowing Midge the opportunity to make amends.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 4 trailer

Unfortunately, with production just starting, it’s unlikely we’ll get a trailer for Season 4 before the end of the year.

We’ll be sure to update once there is one.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 4 synopsis

While there are no official details, it’s safe to say that Season 4 will pick up where Season 3 ended, with Midge back at square one after being kicked off of the Shy Baldwin tour.

With her parents remaining highly critical of her comedy career, they will likely rejoice at this turn of events and try to dissuade her from pursuing comedy any further. However, we know Midge can’t stay out of the spotlight for long. Nevertheless, Abe will likely draw some attention of his own, having gotten offered a job as a theater critic for The Village Voice.

Meanwhile, Joel will likely be busy balancing his career as a nightclub owner along with his new relationship, fatherhood, and, thanks to Susie, managing Midge’s finances. Speaking of which, Susie may find herself in a bit of trouble for committing insurance fraud after using Midge’s earnings to pay off gambling debts, which is sure to cause some friction between the two.
