Finding a show you love can be difficult and when you do, there’s no turning back. No matter what show it is, you can’t stop getting enough of it. Ultimately, having a comfort show became incredibly popular last year and one show many found comfort in was Bob’s Burgers. The show has many seasons and it’s a fun watch if you want something to take your mind off things, it also helped spawn a few other shows.

In particular, Bob’s Burgers eventually helped to create two other series: Central Park which was created by Loren Bouchard, and The Great North which was created by Wendy and Lizzie Molyneux along with Minty Lewis.

The latter of the two is premiering on Fox in February and has already aired two episodes, giving fans a look at what to expect. Thus far, it seems like the show is going to be similar to Bob’s Burgers but not a carbon copy which is good.

The Great North is essentially a new chapter for the Molyneux sisters along with Minty Lewis who created the series with them. While it’s not right to compare the two shows, no doubt it’s going to be its fair share of comparison to Bob’s Burgers. With that being said, it’s only right to see if the series shares the same charm as Bob’s Burgers, and for fans who haven’t watched yet, should you give it a chance?

Before getting into the episodes, it would only be right to talk about what the show’s about. As per Fox’s website, the series “follows the Alaskan adventures of the Tobin family, as a single dad, Beef, does his best to keep his weird bunch of kids close.” Oddly enough, the series doesn’t sound extremely familiar to Bob’s Burgers, but that doesn’t mean it won’t have just as much charm. With that being said, let’s talk about the two episodes they’ve released so far.

More from Animated

The series kicks off with, “Sexi Moose Adventure” which follows multiple different plotlines including Beef’s daughter, Judy turning sixteen which is interrupted by a moose running into the house, and the day only goes downhill from there as nothing seems to go right for Beef.

In the end, the episode takes a predictable turn but does a great job of introducing us to the characters which are necessary at the start of a series. While not a stellar first outing, it does leave room for improvement.

Moving onto the second episode, “Feast of Not People Adventure” which follows the Tobin family going to the Feast of Not People which is all about not eating people, the different events they participate in, and even features some unlikely moments between the family. Overall, this episode does a much better job of focusing on the larger plot rather than getting lost in smaller plots. It is a small improvement over the first episode, but it’s clear the show hasn’t found its footing yet.

As for how the show is similar to Bob’s Burgers, there are a few factors. First, the animation style is incredibly similar. It’s obvious the shows are connected in some ways, but it doesn’t detract from the series. Secondly, both shows feature fun family dynamics especially with the siblings in the family.

Last but not least, the humor of Bob’s Burgers and The Great North go hand-in-hand. It’s not laugh-out-loud funny nor is it raunchy humor, but rather the shows find humor in life or the odd situations the families can get into or how unique the characters in each family are.

As for the differences, The Great North is obviously still trying to find its footing whereas Bob’s Burgers is established. The Great North hasn’t quite found its niche yet but that’ll take some time.

All in all, The Great North has a much better grip on what it wants to be than Bob’s Burgers did at the start. With the show already being renewed for a second season though, there’s no doubt The Great North is going to hopefully follow in the footsteps of the Belchers.

If you like Bob’s Burgers, then I think it’s worth giving The Great North a try. There are too many similarities between the two series for fans to not check it out. Add its unique setting to boot, there is so much potential for what the series can become and it’ll be interesting to see if it follows a similar path to Bob’s Burgers.

The Great North returns with new episodes on Feb. 14 on Fox.
