Season 5 of This Is Us has gotten off to a slow start since premiering in October of 2020. We’ve had some great moments, such as getting to watch Randall learn more about his birth mother Laurel, who didn’t actually die after giving birth to him, or watching an adult Kate confront her abusive ex-boyfriend Marc.

Unfortunately, it feels like Season 5 is having a hard time getting off the ground, although that’s not entirely the show’s fault.

Filming of Season 5 began in September, later than usual, due to filming restrictions prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, just four episodes into Season 5, the show had to take a hiatus to catch up on filming and post-production. Fans were disappointed with this decision, prompting star Mandy Moore to explain the situation on her Instagram Story.

"“I believe I saw on Twitter tonight that [series creator Dan Fogelman] said our post team literally just locked in tonight’s episode last night. So, we have to get caught up. We are literally in the middle of filming, almost at the end of filming, the fifth episode, which would be airing next week. So, we need to catch up. So, we’ll see you in January.”"

The show would return on Jan. 5, 2021, with an episode that saw Kate reveal to Toby that she had gotten an abortion as a teenager after getting pregnant by her ex-boyfriend Marc. Toby later accompanied Kate on a trip to San Diego to confront Marc, allowing Kate to get some closure.

Meanwhile, a new movie role would find Kevin heading off to Vancouver for six weeks amid Madison’s pregnancy, forcing the couple to evaluate their future together while Randall headed off to New Orleans to meet Hai, a friend of his birth mother Laurel.

When will This Is Us Season 5 return?

Although we’ll have to wait a while for the show’s return, we can rest easy knowing that the season is far from over. With six episodes in the can, there are 12 episodes left to air.

Season 5 of This Is Us is set to return on Feb. 9 with an episode entitled “There,” and judging from the promo, it looks like Kevin will find himself in a bit of trouble.

As you may remember, at the end of Episode 6, Randall, on his way home from New Orleans, decided to call Kevin and bury the hatchet. Unfortunately, Kevin answered the phone frazzled, cutting off Randall to tell him that he was trying to get back to Los Angeles in time to be with Madison, who’s in labor.

However, as we can see from the promo for Episode 7, a car crash may prevent Kevin from being by Madison’s side as she gives birth to their twins.

Whether or not Kevin is involved in the car crash has yet to be seen because, despite Kevin’s wallet being next to the crashed car, in the promo, the vehicle itself is a different model than the one we saw him driving in the previous episode. Either way, this event is likely to be a significant one for the Pearson clan, as Justin Hartley hinted at in an interview with TVLine back in December.
