In a world of remakes, reboots, and sequels, a constant problem of films today is that they are heavily reliant on properties that were proven successes years ago. There’s a lot of movies that many would feel didn’t warrant a sequel but one that has taken the championship of “unnecessary” home has clearly been Space Jam 2.

There has been a lot of movies that have tried to carry the legacy of “most unwanted sequel”. Ride Along 2, Weekend at Bernie’s II, Are We Done Yet?, Toy Story 4, and basically any Fast and Furious movie that came after Paul Walker’s death immediately come to mind.

Space Jam was a classic for not only basketball fans, but virtually any child that grew up in the 90s. When you add the greatest basketball player of all time with the most iconic group of cartoons ever, you can’t help but create an unforgettable, albeit goofy, movie.

Space Jam 2 comes off as yet another one of LeBron James’s latest attempts to try and match up with Jordan. His thought process seems to be, if he can’t beat his accomplishments on the court, he may be able to overtake his legacy in entertainment.

The fact of the matter is, Space Jam was a product of the era. It had the perfect vibe with the biggest sports icon ever, and a soundtrack that might arguably be one of the best of all time. It was just perfect for that time period and has established a legacy because of it.

Did we really need a Space Jam 2?

Let’s be honest, right now the Looney Tunes (though still valuable in the nostalgic sense) haven’t really been as popular in recent years because of the overload of animated characters and movies lately, and LeBron is still one of the most polarizing players in the NBA.

Space Jam: A New Legacy seems forced and unnecessary. The whole movie still seems to exist because LeBron James is still chasing that “ghost (that) played in Chicago“. James could’ve made a movie about literally anything else.

He could’ve teamed up with any assortment of animated animals, as there are a plethora of them. However, he had to go after another thing that Jordan has over him, and that’s being the star of a Looney Tunes movie that will more than likely have a similar plot.

dark. Next. Rugrats reboot first look

If this doesn’t scream obsessed then I don’t know what will. He’s setting himself up to once again be hated on when it was entirely avoidable. This one is on him. The film may make a decent chunk of change, but it will never have the lasting power that the original had.

Space Jam: A New Legacy will be streaming on HBO Max and released theatrically on July 16th.
