In Season 5, Episode 12 of This Is Us, “Both Things Can Be True,” we learned a little more about Jack and Miguel’s friendship as Kevin and Madison began wedding planning.

Meanwhile, Kate started a new job and clashed with her supervisor, Beth struggled to cope with Tess’s burgeoning romance, and Randall began attending a transracial identity support group.

In a season that’s been marred by COVID delays, it’s nice to see This Is Us Season 5 gaining some forward momentum. Where things are headed, we have yet to see. Let’s talk about everything that happened on This Is Us Season 5, Episode 12.

This Is Us: Miguel can’t catch a break

Following Jack’s conversation with an old army buddy about whether or not he should propose to Rebecca, this week he was primed and ready!

With Miguel’s help, Jack recreates the first date he and Rebecca went on, right in his apartment. Despite not being able to get a hold of Rebecca’s father to ask for his blessing, he’s moving forward with the proposal, and boy is he nervous!

Luckily, Miguel assures him that this is the kind of stunt that makes girls love him and other men hate him.

Nevertheless, Miguel helps him go through the motions to make sure he gets it just right. While Jack’s speech is effortless, Miguel’s attempt to remove the ring from his finger isn’t.

As the men panic, there’s a knock on the door, and when Jack opens it, there’s Rebecca’s father, Dave Malone. Immediately, the tension is palpable as Jack nervously explains their predicament. Dave then hesitates before apologizing for not getting back to him sooner.

However, he will not bless the union, although he tells Jack he respects that Rebecca has decided how she feels about him, and he will do his best to tolerate him.

While Jack takes that as a win, it’s not good enough for Miguel, who stands up for his friend and tells Dave, Jack would do anything for Rebecca and deserves more respect than Dave gives him.

This leaves Dave speechless until he tells them he knows a trick to remove the ring involving dental floss, an odd but fitting olive branch.

In the present, Miguel is involved in another pre-wedding snafu, as he finds himself at odds with Nicky while discussing the menu for Kevin and Madison’s rehearsal dinner. As the hostility reaches a boiling point, Nicky confronts the issue head-on, saying that it doesn’t sit right with him that the man his brother replaced him with swooped in and married Rebecca.

Unfortunately for Nicky, Miguel is not to be intimidated, and he lets Nicky know that while he wonders what Jack would think every day. Jack is the only person he owes an explanation to.

However, when Nicky calls to apologize later that night, Miguel does tell him that he believes Jack never truly replaced Nicky, that Jack couldn’t even bring himself to call Miguel his best man because he secretly wanted Nicky to fill that role.
