Hey, Wildcats! It’s almost time to go back to East High for sophomore year with the talented showstoppers that make up High School Musical: The Musical – The Series (or HSMTMTS if you’re looking to save some characters). HSMTMTS season 2 reunites the gang for more musical fun and, of course, shenanigans-filled drama.

The series, which breathed new life into the already beloved High School Musical franchise, freshened up the feel-good universe for a new generation. It also cemented the shining star of Olivia Rodrigo–yes, the same one whose song “Driver’s License” has been burning up the charts complete with Taylor Swift’s seal of approval.

With a new year ahead for these kids, and the successful run of Miss Jenn’s High School Musical play under their belts, the series is looking to shake things up, putting their own spin on another well-loved Disney classic.

Let’s dive into what HSMTMTS season 2 has in store for viewers!

HSMTMTS season 2 release date

Sophomore year at East High is set to begin Friday, May 14 on Disney+ with episodes releasing weekly like season 1. IMDb has the second season listed for a 12 episode run.

HSMTMTS season 2 cast

  • Olivia Rodrigo as Nini
  • Joshua Bassett as Ricky
  • Matt Cornett as EJ
  • Julia Lester as  Ashlyn
  • Sofia Wylie as Gina
  • Larry Saperstein as Big Red
  • Dara Renee as Kourtney
  • Frankie A. Rodriguez as Carlos
  • Kate Reinders as Miss Jenn
  • Joe Serafini as Seb

According to Deadline, Derek Hough has joined the HSMTMTS cast as Zack, Ms. Jenn’s ex-boyfriend who is the drama teacher at East High’s rival school, North High.

Olivia Rose Keegan is another addition to the HSMTMTS family. She’ll be playing the character Lily who, judging from the trailer, has some sharp opinions about the East High crew’s acting abilities. Lily also seems to have her eye on Ricky.

Andrew Barth Feldman, Asher Angel, and Roman Banks are also set to guest star.

HSMTMTS season 2 synopsis

Per Deadline:

"In Season 2, the East High Wildcats, who are preparing to perform Beauty and the Beast as their spring musical, face off against rival school North High to win a prestigious and cutthroat student theater competition. Wigs are snatched, loyalties are tested, and ballads are belted. The season also features new solos written by Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett."

Fans can also anticipate a continuation of Nini’s storyline involving her admission into the Youth Actor’s Conservatory. It looks like she and Ricky will be trying their hand at a long-distance relationship.

Nini’s dream came true but as exciting as being in a new place can be, she’s bound not only to miss Ricky but the friends she made while putting on the High School Musical play. Absence can make the heart grow fonder, however, it’s just as true that absence can make someone realize where they’re truly meant to be.
