Everyone loves a fun superhero movie, but is Thunder Force on Netflix appropriate for children? Here’s what we know about the age rating and why.

Melissa McCarthy stars as Lydia in Netflix’s latest film, Thunder ForceIn the movie, Lydia reunites with her childhood best friend Emily (Octavia Spencer), who is working on a very interesting experiment, one that gives people super abilities.

After accidentally obtaining powers of her own, Lydia and Emily become the world’s new crime-fighting duo. But this formula that grants powers is not only being used by good guys. Whenever a new hero rises, there’s a villain waiting.

Both McCarthy and Spencer have proven to be able to stretch their acting chops beyond comedy, especially Spencer. That said, is the movie fun to watch with the whole family or should this one be saved for after the young kids go to sleep?

Thunder Force age rating

According to Rotten Tomatoes, the movie is rated PG-13, so we are already off to a good start. PG-13 movies suggest that no one under the age of 13-years-old should watch, but would be lying if we said we never allowed a kid under that age to watch a PG-13 movie.

Take the Marvel Cinematic Universe, for example, I know plenty of young kids, mine included, watched it. What truly matters is how much a kid can handle (only you know your  kid best) and what the rating is there for — what happens in the movie, exactly.

Thunder Force is rated PG-13 for language, some action and violence, and mild suggestive material.

Keywords here are “some” and “mild.” In other words, nothing too strong. After all, some ratings do make it clear that “strong” language, etc. is featured, but that’s not the case here.

Now, just because you can watch this with the family does not mean they’ll enjoy it. Heroes are fun, but the heroes here are two older women, I don’t think my 7-year-old, for example, will find that much fun. But at least I know I can watch it in the living room without worrying about it.
