Grey’s Anatomy Season 17, Episode 14 seems to have set up an exit storyline for Jackson Avery. Is Jesse Williams really leaving the series?

When Jackson first appeared on Grey’s Anatomy, he wasn’t the most liked character. He was one of the residents from Mercy West who joined Meredith, Cristina, and Alex after the merger. The Mercy West crew didn’t even try to be friendly at first, although Jackson was the first to let down his guard to become a likable character.

In the end, he’s become a fan-favorite. And there’s no doubt that plenty of fans wanted to see Japril happen during the most recent episode. While there were nothing confirmed about Japril, there was certainly a hint that it could happen. It just won’t happen on Grey’s Anatomy.

After the events of the season, Jackson has realized he wants to do more for the system as a whole. He paid a visit to his father and then a visit to April to hear what they thought of his plan and to get their support. However, is he really going through with it?

Jesse Williams is leaving Grey’s Anatomy soon

For those who hoped to see more of Jackson Avery, there is some bad news. Williams is departing the series, and it’s going to be before the Season 17 finale. His final episode will be on May 20, according to Deadline, with these storyline set up in the May 6 episode.

Jackson told his father and April that he wants to do more. He can’t fix the system from the inside, so he wants to fix it from the outside. That means moving to Boston to use his foundation for some good. It is a storyline that has been teased from the start of the season as Jackson saw the inequality in the health care system with COVID-19.

He couldn’t move to Boston without April coming with him. There’s no way he would leave Harriet, their daughter, behind. At first, April wasn’t entertaining the idea, but in the end, she did. She even admitted that she and Matthew were no longer together, opening the door for Japril to happen again off camera (a little like we can believe Calzona has happened again away from the show, too).

This was Williams’s decision and not a “creative decision” on the show. Williams has taken a step back over the last two years as he’s done more work behind the camera, and his contract came to an end after the 17th season.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 still isn’t confirmed. However, if it does happen, Grey Sloan Memorial will need to find a new Head of Plastics.
