Maggie and Winston’s wedding didn’t quite get off without a hitch, but they did eventually get married on the Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 finale. What was with the broom they jumped over?

When Webber asked if anyone objected to Maggie and Winston getting married, both her dad and his grandmother stood up. It wasn’t that they objected to the two of them getting married, but that they objected to the circumstances. They wanted the two to wait and do it with the rest of their family around.

The two honored that, even though it was disappointing, especially considering the work Maggie put into getting her dad and Winston’s grandmother to Seattle. However, the two did get married by the end of the Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 finale.

After their eventual wedding, the two jumped over a broom. It’s not often seen after weddings, but it does have a deep tradition in marriages. What is the deal with it?

Maggie and Winston jump over a broom on the Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 finale

According to Celebrate Intimate Weddings, the jumping over a broom is symbolic. It signifies entering into a new life.

Jumping over the broom signifies the bride and groom sweeping away their single lives to start a new life together.

The tradition itself comes from Africa, and it was brought over by the African slaves. Enslaved Africans would practice it in North America as a way to keep their heritage alive and since slaves could not legally marry.

Considering the storylines throughout Grey’s Anatomy Season 17, especially Winston driving across to Seattle, and the current state of the world, using the broom jumping for Maggie and Winston has a much deeper meaning. It is that connection to their own heritages.
