Has Snowfall been renewed for season 5 on FX Network?

Crime drama Snowfall is now four seasons into its run on FX Network and the show has seen considerable growth. Created by the late John Singleton, Snowfall follows the brilliant Franklin Saint as he goes from prep school to drug kingpin in the streets of South Central Los Angeles during the rise of the crack epidemic. Through the first few episodes of season 4, Snowfall saw a viewership growth of over 41% according to Deadline.

The show’s 4th season saw Franklin (Damson Idris, Outside the Wire) face new challenges as Franklin’s ambition created new allies and those allies became rivals. Manboy (Melvin Gregg, The Way Back) proves to be more of a problem than Franklin expected.

Meanwhile, a new threat emerged as a journalist (played by Suzy Nakamura, Dr. Ken) caught onto the story and looked to expose Franklin and the CIA. Even Franklin’s father puts him in danger this season.

Was Snowfall renewed for season 5?

Well, if it wasn’t obvious already, Snowfall has been renewed for season 5. In fact, it only took those first three episodes of season 4 for the show to secure the renewal. A show getting that large of a boost through its first few episodes of a new season was all FX needed to see and the quality of the show has remained steady. In an era of streaming and binge-watching, Snowfall has managed to show that appointment viewing is not dead.

As a new viewer myself, I had to resort to muting key names from the show on social media to avoid spoilers as users live-tweeted the new episodes. I caught up during the season and was able to join in the live discussion. Personally, I can’t wait for the new season.

When will Season 5 of Snowfall air?

This is the natural next question. Snowfall typically runs from July through September but due to the pandemic, season 4 did not air until February. The season finale aired in late April so one would expect season 5 not to be ready by July, however it likely won’t be delayed until February again either. After the finale aired, we received this update from writer and producer Leonard Chang:

It’s not a solid date but it at least gives us some indication that fans of Snowfall won’t have to wait an extraordinary amount of time for the new season as they did for season 4.

The most recent season ended with a lot of big changes coming for Franklin. Jerome and Louie want out, his parents have fled the country, and at the very end, we saw that he may have regained his health. With the war on drugs raging, the drug business is more dangerous than ever before so what is Franklin’s next move? We’ll have to wait and see.
