NAOMI release date, cast, synopsis, trailer and more
By Sabrina Reed
The CW has added yet another teen show involving superpowers to its roster, and we’re certainly not complaining. NAOMI is set to join Stargirl in the network’s quest to bring some age diversity into the superhero mix.
It’s a step in an interesting direction as this series will be added to The CW’s DC TV offerings, fleshing out the comics-based universe they’ve been cultivating on the channel for years.
This time, however, we’re blending genres as the show looks to be both a mystery and a superhero show that incorporates the multiverse.
Here’s what to expect from the series that’s set to change Naomi’s perspective on the heroes she knows and loves. Perhaps some of those heroes will be a few of our own as well.
NAOMI release date
A release date has yet to be confirmed, however, the show will premiere in the midseason of The CW’s 2021-2022 line-up.
NAOMI cast
Kaci Walfall as Naomi, a cool high school student who’s both book smart and nerdy. She’s beloved by her adoptive parents and quite popular in her military town, Port Oswego. The supernatural event in said town, however, shakes up more than its inhabitants. It endows her with powers of her own.
Barry Watson as Greg, Naomi’s adoptive father whose military service is important to him as are his duties at the military base. He loves his family and the life they have together.
Mouzam Makkar as Jennifer, Naomi’s adoptive mother who is a linguistics instructor at the base. She dotes on her daughter as much as her husband does, the two of them see her as their perfect, bright, and gifted child.
Mary-Charles Jones as Annabelle, Naomi’s best friend who’s prone to telling Naomi the truth even if it’s hard to hear. She’s not quite on board with Naomi’s increasing obsession with the event that rocked their town, but she’s fiercely loyal and determined to support her friend as best she can.
Daniel Puig as Nathan, Naomi’s ex-boyfriend. The jock to her nerd, the two have cultivated a friendship despite the end of their romance. However, that doesn’t mean all of the sparks have fizzled out between them. Their chemistry is still palpable but it’s not enough for Naomi to give them another chance which sets Nathan’s jealousy alight when he notices her interest in someone else.
Will Meyers as Anthony, a teen who describes himself as a proud townie. His crush on Naomi often pushes him to help any way he can when she’s got a mission on the brain.
Aidan Gemme as Jacob, Annabelle’s long-time boyfriend. He’s a sweet and shy nerd who’s been smitten with her since 5th grade.
Alexander Wraith as Dee, the owner of the local tattoo shop who knows more about what’s happening in Port Oswego than he’s willing to let on.
Cranston Johnson as Zumbado, the owner of the local used car lot who makes Naomi wary. She’s intent on staying away from him thanks to the rumors she’s heard about his past. However, when their paths do cross it leaves her as curious as she is bothered by the encounter.
Camila Moreno as Lourdes, a worker in a vintage collectibles store. She’s sarcastic, funny, and has a crush on Naomi that’s not going anywhere despite it being unrequited. The two girls share a love of classic comics and Lourdes is always willing to join Naomi on whatever scheme she has cooked up.
NAOMI synopsis
The official synopsis via Deadline:
"From Oscar nominee/Emmy winner Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship (“Arrow”), and starring Kaci Walfall (“Army Wives,” “Power,” “The Lion King” on Broadway) in the title role, the DC drama NAOMI follows the journey of a cool, confident, comic book–loving teenager as she pursues her hidden destiny. When a supernatural event shakes her small hometown of Port Oswego, Naomi sets out to uncover its origins, with a little help from her fiercely loyal best friend Annabelle (Mary-Charles Jones, “Kevin Can Wait”). She also has the support of her adoptive, doting parents, veteran military officer Greg (Barry Watson, “7th Heaven,” “The Loudest Voice”) and linguist Jennifer (Mouzam Makkar, “The Fix”).After an encounter with Zumbado (Cranston Johnson, “Filthy Rich”), the mysterious owner of a used car lot, leaves her shaken, Naomi turns to tattoo shop owner Dee (Alexander Wraith, “Orange Is the New Black”), who becomes her reluctant mentor. While unraveling the mystery of herself, Naomi also navigates her high school friendships with both military kids and local townies, including ex-boyfriend and high school jock Nathan (Daniel Puig, “The System”); Annabelle’s longtime, loyal boyfriend Jacob (Aidan Gemme, “Deliver Us From Evil”); proud “townie” Anthony (Will Meyers, “Bad Education”); and fellow comic book enthusiast Lourdes (newcomer Camila Moreno). As Naomi journeys to the heights of the Multiverse in search of answers, what she discovers will challenge everything we believe about our heroes."
Given the premise of this show, we wonder if Naomi will discover just how many times the universe has been rewritten thanks to the decisions her heroes have made. The Flash has more than once explored the repercussions Barry’s actions have had on other people’s lives.
Meddling with the space-time continuum has consequences that can irreparably change who a person is along with the people around them. A recent example would be how Mia Smoak’s life went down a different path in the backdoor pilot for Green Arrow & The Canaries after her father, Oliver Queen wrote the multiverse out of existence.
Clearly, it’s back in this world but as she pieces things together, she’s bound to find out just how wrong our heroes have gotten things and how it’s affected the lives around them.
NAOMI trailer
A trailer has yet to be released. However, Ava DuVernay has shared some behind-the-scenes pictures from filming on her Twitter.
