F9: The Fast Saga proved once again that names matter in the current box office climate. This weekend, the film hit $70 million, the highest box office number since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019.

The box office had a reset due to covid and certain films are performing better than others. A Quiet Place Part 2 did well as the first blockbuster out of the gate, but movies like In the Heights have struggled to gain traction.

The most notable trend right now is that established franchises, or movies with big names, are helping Hollywood get back on its feet. For example, when I went to see F9 in 4DX, a family of eight, yes EIGHT, sat next to me. Now, 4DX isn’t cheap, and it is around $25 plus tax per ticket. Mix that, and they had a few popcorns and drinks. So this family was easily out close to $400.

How much money did F9 make in theaters?

When you look at the franchise as a whole, more recently, Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw made $60 million on opening weekend. So even post-pandemic, these numbers are MASSIVE. The film has already made over $400 million worldwide to date, with more countries still needing to screen the movie.

What happens next will be interesting. Critics haven’t been too kind to the film (sorry, critics, these films aren’t for you), but word of mouth has been audience hen great from the audiences to the tune of 84% of Rotten Tomatoes, but will that give the film legs to push it closer to 6-700 million?

Vin Diesel and the family recently announced they would begin filming on the ‘to be named’ 10th and 11th installment of the franchise in January. So more over-the-top crazy action is coming back to the big screen soon.
