6 new Netflix shows and movies to watch this weekend
July is flying by and another weekend is among us. That means it’s time for us to tell you what new Netflix shows and movies you should be queuing up for your weekend movie night or binge session. Here are the shows and movies that you should be adding to your list for July 16-18.
This week is heavily centered around woman-led entries with the hottest docuseries and show being centered around women. There was also a mid-week film entry that was heavily centered around women with Gunpowder Milkshake (featuring Karen Gillan, Angela Bassett, Lena Heady, and more) bursting onto the scene.
Gunpowder Milkshake is a stylish assassin movie that has funny moments but is very bloody as well. It is already in the Netflix top 10.
This past week we saw new seasons of Virgin River and Atypical released and both are also in Netflix’s top 10 with Virgin River being number one a week later. Not just number one among Netflix show but number one overall on Netflix. Both shows are certainly worth catching up on if you haven’t done so already. Now let’s get to the new stuff.
New Netflix shows and movies this week
- Ridley Jones: Season 1, July 13
- Naomi Osaka: Season 1, July 13
- Gunpowder Milkshake (movie), July 14
- Heist: Season 1, July 14
- Never Have I Ever season 2, July 15
- Fear Street Part Three:1666, July 16
Best show this week
The series co-created by office alum Mindy Kaling, Never Have I Ever, burst onto the scene in a big way last year. Netflix shows centered around teenagers are nothing new but this one features an Indian-American lead and manages to tackle heavier subjects in a way that never feels forced.
In the show, Devi (played by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), tries to navigate high school life while balancing cultural traditions and the normal pressures teenagers have like trying to get in with the cool kids, boys, and keeping your grades up so you can get into a good school.
Never Have I Ever does a great job of being both hilarious and showing a young person dealing with grief. I won’t spoil any details about the show but if you resisted the wave last season, it’s not too late to jump on. This show is likely here to stay for a while.
Best movie this week
We mentioned Gunpowder Milkshake but if you’ve been keeping up with our “What to watch this weekend” series we definitely had to finish with the third entry in the Fear Street series. Fear Street Part Three: 1666 takes an even larger leap into the past as we close out the three-week rollout. The first two entries in the series are both still in the top 10 on Netflix so the third will also be a hot commodity.
Critics and fans alike love the first two entries with 1978 getting a bit more love so far so the series sounds like a safe watch. If you’ve been putting the series off you can now binge all three films this weekend if you so choose.
What will you be watching this weekend? If we left out your pick, be sure to let us know!
