One of the biggest movies of 2021 is set to arrive this fall when Dune premieres in late October. This comes almost a year after the film’s original release date of Nov. 20, 2020, which was pushed back multiple times due to the pandemic.

Based on the bestselling novel from Frank Herbert, Dune tells the story of a young son in a royal family and his quest to protect the most important resource in the galaxy, “melange,” which is also known as the spice. The novel is considered sacred sci-fi text because of its influence in pop culture. Herbert’s novel paved the way for important sci-fi movies like Star Wars and Blade Runner.

Dune has had multiple adaptations in both film and television with the most notable being 1984’s film of the same name directed by David Lynch. The film was panned by critics upon release, but has since garnered a cult following. The director of the 2021 version is Denis Villeneuve, who is one of the best sci-fi and action directors of the 21st century with hits like Sicario, Arrival, and Blade Runner 2049.

Dune is scheduled to be released in theaters on Oct. 22, 2021. Since Dune is a Warner Bros. film, it will simultaneously premiere on HBO Max the very same day. The film will be available to stream for 31 days before be removed from the service.
