We all know that box office returns are king and they set the tone for whether or not we will get a sequel to a movie or not. As most are calling it due to the pandemic, the box-office reset will be very vital to how studios handle bigger properties. So, will Snake Eyes 2 happen? I explore that below.

The G.I. Joe franchise has never set the box-office world on fire. The first two films had production budgets over $300 million before accounting for marketing. However, between the two films, they brought in close to $700 million worldwide. On paper, that sounds great, but a movie has to make 1.5-2 times the budget to break even; the films were far from successful.

Paramount was hoping to change that with their latest film, Snake Eyes. The film is a spin-off centered around the origin story of Snake Eyes, one of the more popular figures in the world of G.I. Joes. The casting of Henry Golding as the lead role was met with excitement and promise of a revitalized franchise starter.

Enter COVID, which led to the movie being delayed from March 27, 2020, to Oct. 16, 2020, and then a week later to Oct. 23, 2020, which led to the final push of July 23, 2021. The studios were hard-pressed to try and figure out when theaters would be open enough to maximize their box office potential.

Why did Snake Eyes have lackluster box-office open?

What went wrong? Honestly, as exciting as it was to have Henry Golding as Snake Eyes, I don’t think his name alone sparked enough for the average person. So factor that in with the world still being cautious of going to theaters and toss in the fact that each week moviegoers have close to 4-5 options to see in theaters, so will they go see Henry Golding as Snake Eyes or M. Night’s latest scare fast in Old?

People are flocking to what they know in theaters. The box office trends as of late have proven that with the success of A Quiet Place Part Two, F9 and even more recently, with Black Widow.

Will Snake Eyes 2 happen?

Without divulging any spoilers, the film does leave it open for a sequel, so what needs to happen for this to be made? I think they can do a few things. First, drop the movie on Paramount+, utilize what you have to garner interest for subscriptions to the streaming platform.

Second, since you will drop it on the streaming platform, make it available to the worldwide audience by giving it a VOD rental release. These two things can send it in the right direction to at least break even.

The budget for this film was around $88 million, so toss in approximately $60-80 million for marketing (don’t forget the remarket during the pandemic), and if the movie can hit around $100 million worldwide box office, we can slowly start to see the appeal to warrant a sequel.

So many questions remain left unanswered, but at the end of the day, Snake Eyes will be seen as a disappointment. How much of one is still in question.

At this time, there are no official plans for a sequel. We’ll keep you posted!
