With the premiere of A24’s The Green Knight, we take a look at Dev Patel and his craftsmanship, his acting journey and where you can stream his other starring roles.

If you are familiar with Indian mothers, then you know it is uncommon for them to encourage their kids to pursue a career in the arts, much less drag them to their first audition with hardly any prior acting experience. Dev Patel shared with W Magazine back in 2017 about how his Mom had read an advert for open auditions in a newspaper she picked up while riding the train. For those who fancy classic British teen drama, you would remember Dev Patel’s debut as Anwar on the cult, TV hit series Skins.

Patel told W that in those years he would continue to lead a nonchalant, unoriginal life as a high schooler throughout the week, but come time to the weekends it was back shooting another episode. His acting career and adolescence would remain separate until he was skyrocketed into fame as the lead in the global phenomenon picture Slumdog Millionaire at the age of 17.

Dev Patel is a standout in The Green Knight

I assume your memory is being jogged now; and as you take a harder look you probably see now that this is the same actor who played the orphaned Saroo Brietley in Lion, the role which landed Dev Patel a nomination for an Academy Award. Or perhaps you recognize him as the one who played David Copperfield in the Andrew Iannucci adaption. Due to his silvery cadence, Dev Patel has also lent himself to voice acting in films such as slice of life anime Only Yesterday.

Whether or not Dev can do anything the industry throws at him is not the question. It is whether or not Hollywood can give Dev Patel roles that will stretch him beyond the likes of what he has already displayed. The answer can be found in possibly the most unnerving movie of Patel’s career.

The Green Knight is not only a huge opportunity for the varnished thespian, but a refreshing release from the often Middle Eastern and South Asian roles Dev is typically offered. In this epic, Dev takes on the role of Gawain, a romanticizing medieval warrior yearning for honor.

Whether Gawain will attain the glory he so voraciously longs for is yet to be seen. Regardless, Dev Patel deserves his flowers and we are hyped to say the least to see him star in this for sure masterpiece.

The Green Knight is written and directed by David Lowry and premieres exclusively in theaters July 30. If you wish to catch up on his previous movies or are impressed with Dev Patel’s abilities on screen and want more, here is where you can stream more of his captivating performances.
