Gossip Girl (2021) episode 4 spoilers: Who is Milo Sparks?
By Sabrina Reed
We’re nearly halfway through Gossip Girl (2021)‘s first season, and the HBO Max original series just debuted its first character from the OG in the reboot!
Fans knew before the new Gossip Girl premiered that characters from the OG would make an appearance. However, showrunner Joshua Safran made it clear that the series regulars from the original wouldn’t be stepping into the limelight, at least not in the first season.
Safran told The Daily Beast they’d draw attention away from this new cast that’ll be establishing their own place in Gossip Girl’s world.
"We made a decision early on…that the audience would never accept these characters if they were in the shadow of the original characters. The decision was: Let’s get Season 1 under our belt, and should we get Season 2, we’ll have the chance to bring in cameos that are more than glorified cameos but actually give them storylines…There are some cameos in Season 1 from people on the original show, but not the series regulars."
Despite this, the creative writing team behind Gossip Girl (2021), managed to infuse OG nostalgia into a character who could become a fun figure in the show without pulling focus. How? By bringing baby Milo, Georgina Sparks’ son that she tried to pass off as Dan Humphrey’s, back into the fold.
Gossip Girl (2021) episode 4 “Fire Walks with Z” reintroduces Milo Sparks
Spoilers ahead of Gossip Girl (2021) episode 4
No longer an infant, Milo Sparks is a ten-year old tech whiz played by Azhy Robertson. He sidles up to Zoya in “Fire Walks with Z,” and invites her to the dark side. She’s got a problem in Julien, whose scheming is already ruining an already tough birthday, and he has a solution.
Milo, embodying the energy of a pint-sized member of the Russian mob complete with a darkly whimsical theme, puts his succession plan into effect. He’d floated a coup by Little Z, but she immediately nixed that idea.
In the end, the two settle on getting Neo-Queen J canceled on Twitter and drugging her so she’ll embarrass herself at her own party. As Milo mentions in the episode, it’s a little pedestrian so his mother wouldn’t approve, but it fits the level of payback Zoya is willing to indulge.
Z, however, isn’t Milo’s first client. He did a dirty deed for Luna as well. It seems Milo trades in information. He does something for you, and one day he cashes in on something he wants. In “Fire Walks with Z” it’s as small as intel on what Luna and Monet were planning but, if he sticks around, we’re sure they’ll be more he digs up for his own benefit.
Actor Azhy Robertson on playing Milo Sparks in Gossip Girl (2021)
In an interview with Teen Vogue, Robertson described his character as “an agent of chaos” just like his mom, Georgina. Of course, this means he’s here in Gossip Girl (2021) to stir up trouble. We got a taste of that in episode 4, but Robertson is hoping for more.
He’d like to channel Georgina’s energy, taking the place she held in the OG Gossip Girl:
"Whenever things seem all fine and dandy and nice and all the conflict’s resolved, he comes in to mess everything up again."
It’s a great space to inhabit in the series, a memorable one if the reboot uses his character well. Georgina wasn’t in that many episodes of Gossip Girl, but she’s nonetheless an iconic figure in the show and a fan favorite. Not to mention the way Robertson sees Milo is undoubtedly the kind of fun the reboot needs.
"He’s like an evil genius. He’s almost a super villain. He’s almost comically evil, like mustache twirling."
The possibilities for the direction Milo Sparks’ character could take are endless. But, we’re hoping he somehow gets involved in the teachers’ storyline.
He’s an eighth grader at Constance St. Jude’s so he isn’t in their orbit, but Milo knows how to wage war and effectively take down his targets.
These teens may need him to go nuclear on Gossip Girl if the time ever comes which could let the cat out of the bag on just who the anonymous gossipmonger is. Now that’s the kind of chaos Georgina Sparks would approve of without a shadow of a doubt.
New episodes of Gossip Girl (2021) release Thursdays on HBO Max.
