The Lord of the Rings trilogy is still the best trilogy, and some of the best movies in general, of all-time. Peter Jackson’s sprawling epic covering J.R.R. Tolkien’s incredible books took the world by storm in the early 2000s.

Not only did these films bring fantasy back into the limelight with fans, it also was able to break its way into Hollywood’s biggest night, The Oscars, with the third film, The Return of the King, tying the record winning 11 of 11 of its Oscars.

In 2017 Amazon bought the television rights to The Lord of the Rings for a lofty $250 million. They not only spent that much money to purchase the rights to the television production, but they are also putting in a hefty amount of money into the show, with a $465 million dollar budget for season 1 alone.

This would make season 1 of the show almost double in budget what it took to make the original three films ($281 million). It’s safe to say that with the hype surrounding the show, this massive budget could easily be worth it.

The Lord of the Rings premiere date: When is it coming out?

This tweet was shared by the Lord of the Rings on Prime Twitter account:

This tweet, and first look picture, both confirm that one of the most anticipated TV shows of all-time officially has a release date on the Amazon Prime Streaming service, and that day is September 2, 2022.

From this, we can also see a first look picture of the show, which seems to keep the same look and feel to it that the original trilogy had back in the early 2000s.

This show has been in production for years, even getting a behind the scenes look on their own YouTube page over two years ago.

With this news, it finally looks as if The Lord of the Rings on Prime is finally taking the steps to get in our living rooms soon.

The Lord of the Rings on Prime synopsis

Developed by Patrick McKay and John D. Payne, writers and producers of the announced Flash Gordon movie, this TV show will be taking a different approach to the story we know and love. It will be set thousands of years before the events of Lord of the Rings, and even before the events of The Lord of the Rings predecessor, The Hobbit.

The Lord of the Rings on Prime, as they are calling it for now, is set to take place in the Second Age of Middle-Earth during the re-emergence of evil, most notably with titular Lord of the Rings villain Sauron, back into Middle Earth.
