I often ask myself what the best decade for film was. Unfortunately, we tend to overlook the decades before we were born because we are prisoners of the moment. Today, I wanted to go back in time and revisit the 25 best 80s movies of all time.

Some of the best film franchises were born in the ’80s, from the Eddie Murphy-led Beverly Hills Cop to Michael J. Fox’s Back to the Future to the beginning of the Ghostbusters. Those movies have brought us joy for many years.

We could also look at the stand-alone films that stood the test of time. For example, another Eddie Murphy-led film Coming to America, the Oscar-winning movie Rain Man to what some say is the greatest horror movie of all time, The Shining.

Before we get to the list, I wanted to share my thought process that went into ranking the best of the ’80s. The first thing I did was went to Twitter and asked about some of their favorite films of the ’80s. I did this because I wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing any great movies that I may not have remembered or maybe needed to rewatch before making the list.

I also took a look at the Oscar winners from the decade to cover that basis as well. Finally, I took a look at a few best-of lists from that decade to get an idea of where other people’s heads were at.

So after much deliberation, rewatching, and going back and forth, I present my top 25 movies of the 1980s.

Don’t forget, after checking out my list to share the films you believe are the best 80s movies.
