Queen Sugar season 6 release date, cast, synopsis, trailer, and more
By Sabrina Reed
Queen Sugar season 6 is on the minds of many fans who have been riding with the Bordelons for nearly five years on OWN. We’ve seen this family go through triumph and heartbreak, destruction and renewal, only to come out on the other side stronger as a unit. Season 5 of the drama series was no different.
While COVID restrictions had a noticeable impact on the storytelling in the fifth season of Queen Sugar, the writers did what they’ve always done on this show. They touched on current events, shaping a narrative that spoke on issues in America specific to the year 2020 and the history of injustice that has plagued this nation.
But they also highlighted the specificity of Black joy as well as the importance of community and family. Queen Sugar has always been a show concerned with telling the totality of its characters’ lives, both the ugly and the beautiful.
That’s why we’re thankful Queen Sugar was renewed for a season 6, promising more storytelling centered on the Bordelon family and the people they love.

Queen Sugar season 6 plot synopsis
The synopsis for season 6 via Deadline:
"The Ava DuVernay series returns as Ralph (Kofi Siriboe) and Darla (Bianca Lawson) are planning for the arrival of their new baby while Nova (Rutina Wesley) continues to speak out against political corruption and Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) faces a life-altering decision. Queen Sugar’s sixth season will reveal joy amid the struggle and humanity’s ability to persevere through whatever life may bring."
Executive producer Paul Garnes also sat down with Deadline to provide some insight on the season 5 finale and how the final moments of the season serve as a bridge into the next installment of the story.
Garner told Deadline:
"You know, it’s really kind of that dawn moment after the storm where you start looking forward again. I think that the season has been a very tough experience for our different families and we walked into the season finale on the verge of dawn, and the possibility of what could be next for each of the main characters."
Most of the characters in the season 5 finale took a step toward a new beginning, for better or for worse. Darla and Ralph are expecting a child together, Charley is giving Davis a second chance, Blue went off to school in D.C., and Calvin turned himself in for his part in a case of police brutality leaving his relationship with Nova hanging in the air.
Queen Sugar season 6 is most likely going to capitalize on this momentum toward change especially since Garnes stated the pandemic “gave [them] an opportunity to shrink the story down to the core elements of who our characters are and what they’re going through.”
Going forward, we may see a continuation of the kind of introspective storytelling seen in season 5.
