While most people wait until October to watch horror movies, September unofficially kicks off Halloween. If you’re looking for something fun to do this spooky season, we recommended some James Wan movies. No way can you be disappointed, especially with his newest release.

For horror fans, James Wan is a name we’ve heard a lot in recent years, and rightfully so. Wan has directed and written some of the best modern horror movies. While horror movies have a long history, Wan has managed to take the genre in an entirely new direction and it’s clear he isn’t looking back.

While Wan is mostly known for his horror films, he does have a few non-horror films under his belt if you don’t enjoy being spooked. If you haven’t watched DC’s Aquaman, it was directed by Wan. As a producer, you might have watched his project including 2021’s Mortal Kombat. He is mostly known for his horror films, though.

This upcoming spooky season, watching James Wan’s films is the ultimate way to basically ensure you want to sleep with the lights on. Even if you’re not ready for the spooky season just yet, maybe watching one of James Wan’s movies will help get you there.

Which James Wan movies should kick off your Spooky September session?

The Conjuring franchise

Let’s start off with a pretty obvious one, and that’s the Conjuring film series by James Wan. If you’ve watched the Conjuring films, this is an easy place to start. The film follows the lives of Ed and Lorraine Warren as they investigate paranormal incidents. The first film entitled The Conjuring introduced us to the lovebirds and since then, Wan really hasn’t looked back.

The Nun and The Curse of La Llorona

While it originally started off with just the Warrens, things have branched out from there with popular characters from the movies getting their own films. Annabelle who is the cursed doll from the first film has gotten multiple movies. There’s also been The Nun and The Curse of La Llorona which Wan was involved. If you’re looking for modern scares, then this is the perfect place to start.

The Saw franchise

If you’re looking for a bit more blood, guts and gore though, you might not know that Wan is actually the person who directed the first Saw film. While he didn’t direct any of the future films, he was involved in some capacity. Some might say that the first film is the best and it’s hard to disagree. No doubt most of us horror fans have already watched the Saw films. Either way, it could be a nice rewatch.

Insidious

If Saw isn’t your thing, then you might want to turn to another James Wan project and that’s Insidious which is another demonic story following a family who can’t seem to figure out what’s wrong with their son. Things spiral from there especially Elise is called in to try and put a stop to what’s going on. As with most of his films, Insidious ended up becoming a franchise with four films currently out.

Malignant

If you’ve watched all of James Wan’s previous films, then no doubt you’re either getting ready to or have watched Malignant which is his newest film on HBO Max and in theaters. The film follows Maddie, a woman who sees visions of murders but can’t seem to figure out why or how it’s happening to her. As far as James Wan films go, this one is definitely unique and has a solid plot twist considering how predictable it could be.

James Wan is definitely the most well-known name when it comes to recent horror films and it doesn’t look like he’s slowing down anytime soon. While most might wait until October to watch his films, it’s probably a good thing to start now if you plan on getting caught up before Halloween. Either way, James Wan is definitely the perfect person to help you kick off Spooky September.
