There’s nothing like a good Halloween movie to watch with the whole family and if you have little kids who aren’t ready for full-fledged horror movies yet, then Casper is a great choice. There are some thematic elements that might frighten very little kids, but for the most part, the whole family can enjoy Casper together.

Casper follows a benevolent, friendly ghost who lives peacefully in a house in Maine. An investigator (Bill Pullman) arrives at the house to communicate with Casper and he brings his daughter (Christina Ricci). Casper and Kat form a friendship and become very close, but their friendship is jeopardized by Casper’s evil uncles who delight in causing mayhem and trouble wherever they go.

Based on the popular Casper the Friendly Ghost cartoon that ran in theaters between 1945 and 1959. The story of a friendly ghost who only wanted to meet people and make friends quickly captured the imaginations of young and old people alike, spawning several animated features. The live-action movie also spawned sequels including 1998’s Casper Meets Wendy.

Casper isn’t streaming on Netflix or Hulu this Halloween, but it’s available to rent or buy through a number of services such as Vudu, Google Play, YouTube TV, Amazon and Apple TV.
