Best Reality shows: The Circle

Network it airs on: Netflix

Years it’s aired: 2020 to present

What it’s about: During the game, all the contestants move into an apartment building. They never meet face-to-face, staying inside their own apartments, but communicate via a social media app that’s only developed for the game. It gives everyone a chance to take on a new persona if they want, or they can choose to be themselves.

Throughout the series, the contestants will “rate” each of the other players. Those with the highest ratings become the “influencers” with the rest of the players at risk of being “blocked.” There are twists here and there, but eventually, players are all eliminated from the game with only one being allowed to win the cash prize.

When players are eliminated, they share whether their profiles were real or fake.

Why it’s one of the greatest: There are plenty of game shows out there that involve people competing for a cash prize. Netflix brought us something a little different in 2020, giving us some sort of entertainment during the pandemic. It was all about The Circle. Since then, we’ve had three seasons and there’s no sign of the show slowing down with all the international versions around.

This is a little like a cross between Catfish and Big Brother. Players will often need to work together strategically if they want to make it to the end, but that doesn’t mean they have to be themselves. Many players will choose to be someone different in a chance to win the grand prize.

It’s entertaining for those of us watching it. We get drawn into the strategies of the players and the teams that may or may not form.
