The Wonder Years (2021) premiere introduced the television audience to the Williams family and its youngest member, Dean, in an episode about unity.

As 12 year old Dean explains, 1968 shares some similarities with our present day. There’s a pandemic sweeping across the globe, a presidential election has divided the nation, and his parents have had to give him “The Talk” about how to engage with police officers as a Black young man.

Dean’s been struggling to find his place in his family given his mother’s intelligence, his father’s coolness, his sister’s popularity and activism, and his brother’s current fight in Vietnam as a soldier. He lands on being “The Great Uniter” and works with his friends Cory and Brad to schedule a game between his all-Black baseball team and the all-White team from across town.

The game is a success, but it’s interrupted by news of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination. Later, Dean gets an upsetting surprise of his own when he catches Cory kissing his crush, Keisa.
