Why isn’t Hotel Transylvania 4 on Amazon Prime yet?

October has officially arrived and with the start of the spookiest month of the year, families across the nation are looking forward to checking out this year’s seasonal movie offerings. After a quiet 2020, 2021 promises the arrival of several new offerings including what is being billed as the final film in the Hotel Transylvania franchise, Hotel Transylvania 4. 

Originally, Sony Pictures Animation was hoping to make the film its blockbuster hit of the fall season in eyeing to release the film just in time for Halloween 2021. However, due to the ongoing pandemic and the increase in the delta variant cases, the studio decided to explore other options.

Hotel Transylvania 4 release date in theaters

The original plan for the fourth film in the Hotel Transylvania franchise was for the final film in the hit franchise to open in theaters on Oct. 1, 2021. Out of an abundance of caution, though, Sony Pictures Animation announced in August that it would be skipping a theatrical release for the film and would instead look to find a streaming home for the film to release exclusively on.

With the decision made to pull the film’s theatrical release, Sony Pictures Animation looked to streaming services as its alternative release destination for the film. After exploring its options, it was reported by Variety that the studio was in final negotiations to release the film exclusively on Amazon Prime on Oct. 1.

While Amazon Prime will become home to Hotel Transylvania, the terms of the deal struck between Amazon Sony Pictures Animation have led to a later than anticipated release date for the film.

So when exactly does Hotel Transylvania 4 come out? While all reports seem to suggest the film was set to release on Amazon Prime on Oct. 1, Deadline is now reporting the fourth film in the franchise will now release on Jan. 14, 2022.

With Amazon and Sony Pictures Animation’s deal now locked in, it has been confirmed Hotel Transylvania 4 will release globally via Amazon Prime Video on Friday, Jan. 14, 2022.

It’s an interesting move for both parties as this film definitely has strong Halloween vibes and would have been perfect for an October 2021 release. Instead, it looks like fans will have to wait until the new year to catch the final film in the franchise.
