How did Animal Kingdom Season 5 end? What to expect in Season 6

Animal Kingdom Season 5 has now come to an end, and it featured the largest heist of the season. As we learned in previous episodes, the Codys were seeking a shipping container full of a million dollars in cash. So how did the heist go? What major plot twists were revealed? Here’s what happened at the end of Animal Kingdom Season 5.

At the pot, Pope and Craig were successfully able to get out with duffel bags of cash, but it was J who ran into trouble when he was suspected of lying about his job on the dock, resulting in a chase scene involving gunfire.

Though the 4 of them were able to reunite successfully and secure the money, they were chased by port police agents and had to pull off a stunt before dropping the money into the water and diving after it.

The money made it back to the house without issue, but we suspect this job will come back to haunt them when the person they stole from seeks revenge. J is identifiable from the port, and there are loose ends from the Codys being seen fleeing with the money.

Though the mission was successful, Pope wanted to tackle some unfinished business and drives with J to Pete’s garage to confront him about the the coke. J watches as Pope attacks Pete, digging his fingers into Pete’s eyes and taking one of his eyes out, threatening his life if he doesn’t share the coke money. Craig and Deran learn what happened as they set up for a family dinner — a post-heist tradition Pope wants to keep alive.

In the past timeline, we start to see a darker side of Janine’s relationship with Andrew and Julia. She makes them feel guilty for getting caught trying to steal a wallet and encourages them to get better at stealing to be able to have nice things. She shows Andrew and Julia the house for the first time, and as the three of them sit by the pool, she reveals to the twins that she’s pregnant with Craig. We also see another tease of Julia’s future drug addiction when Smurf lets her sip on alcohol for the first time.

What was the plot twist in the Animal Kingdom Season 5 finale?

In the final present-day scene, the Codys sit together at the dinner table and agree on a new plan for how they’ll launder all of the cash. They raise their drinks and repeat the Smurf’s toast “May we get what we want, and never what we deserve.” We’re just disappointed there wasn’t a callback to pie.

Everything went almost too well, which is when the biggest plot twist of the finale was revealed. At a remote crime scene, a body was uncovered in the desert. We thought it might have something to do with the DEA agent, but no, the body actually belongs to Baz’s wife Catherine.

Pope killed Catherine on Smurf’s orders in Season 2, and it looks like this will come back to haunt the Codys in Season 6. We can also expect to see Pope, Julia and Baz working together as teenagers, and we will meet a young Craig as well. Animal Kingdom Season 6 will be the series’ final season and all episodes have already been filmed. We expect Season 6 to air in summer 2022, but no official date has been announced.
