What happened to Nic on The Resident Season 5, Episode 3?
We knew Emily VanCamp was leaving The Resident after four seasons. The question was how her character, Nic, would be written out.
Caution: There are major spoilers from The Resident Season 5, Episode 3 in this post.
Emily VanCamp’s very real pregnancy was written into The Resident without us even knowing. It was during the summer break that we learned she and husband Josh Bowman welcomed their first child. Shortly after that, news leaked that VanCamp wouldn’t return to the series.
It left us with a lot of questions. How was The Resident going to handle VanCamp’s exit from the series? How would Nic be written out of the show?
One way would be for Nic to leave Chastain, and even Atlanta. That wouldn’t make sense with everything that happened over the course of the last four seasons. Nic and Conrad married and welcomed their first child into the world. The idea of Nic abandoning Conrad and Gigi was absurd.
At the end of The Resident Season 5, Episode 2, Conrad got a visit from the cops. It was clear something grave had happened, and that came up in The Resident Season 5, Episode 3.
Did Nic die on The Resident?
Conrad raced to the hospital as Nic was MedEvaced into Chastain. It was serious, but there was a tiny bit of hope. Nic suffered a serious TBI and was unconscious. Despite Billie’s best efforts, Nic had to be put into a medically-induced coma if she had any chance of survival.
Conrad wasn’t happy with it, of course. However, Bell made it clear that Conrad wasn’t the one in charge of Nic’s care. Billie was the one in charge.
Nobody was going to give up, but it was clear that everyone feared the worse. It was after another brain bleed that Kit and Bell confirmed Nic wasn’t going to survive the injuries. However, they needed to perform one final test and couldn’t ask Billie to do it. Devan was the one to perform the tests despite how heartbroken he was at the idea.
The tests heartbreakingly confirmed that Nic was braindead. We’re now left with the aftermath, as Conrad figures out how to go on without his wife. She lives on inside his heart.
WIth Devan doing the test, Conrad accepted it. It was Nic’s father, Kyle, who couldn’t accept the truth. That wasn’t that surprising. Conrad is the doctor and could find a way to step back because he trusted his colleagues, and he knows that being hooked up to machines would be hell for Nic. Kyle has already lost one daughter at Chastain, and he couldn’t lose another one.
Nic will live on in eight critically ill patients. She was an organ donor, and there’s no way that Conrad was going to go against those wishes.
By the way, can I say thank you for using a cover of Iris as the final song with all the flashbacks of Nic? That was my wedding song and now I have a much better connection for the song than my ex-husband. I’ll cry for the right reasons because right now, I’m bawling my eyes out.
What did you think of Nic’s exit on The Resident Season 5, Episode 3? Did you call how it would go? Are you glad the writers didn’t have Nic just abandon her family? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
