The Wonder Years (2021) was messy in a pre-teen way in the last episode, “Green Eyed Monster.” Dean took advantage of both white guilt and his family’s assumptions that he’d been upset about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination to skate by for awhile. In reality, he was working through a broken heart over seeing his best friend Cory and his crush Keisa kissing.

The episode, while uncomfortable, did put into perspective how young Dean is and that he’s a kid living through events that a modern audience mostly has a historical and reverent context for.

The Wonder Years (2021) feels less like a show that’s trying to hold up a mirror to past events and political movements and more like a show that reminds viewers that history has the benefit of hindsight. These episodes are passing glimpses at everyday life for the Williams and the world they live in, not an in-depth exploration of the times.

In that way, the show is able to keep hold of its comedic light whilst still be cognizant of the times it takes place in. Episode 3, however, seems to be settingan awareness of the historical period to the side in order to focus on the inevitable talk parents go through with their children aka the birds, the bees, and explicit content.

Here’s what to expect from the third episode of the series!

What is The Wonder Years (2021) episode 3 about?

Sitcoms focused on pre-teens and younger teenagers rarely escape an episode about “racy literature” and The Wonder Years (2021) is no different.

In “The Club,” Dean comes across one such magazine and shares what he found with his boys. Of course, as all of them are young, they know about as much about sex and the female form as what they’ve heard, been told, and seen.

However, that doesn’t mean they don’t see their exploration of explicit magazines as a step into manhood. They don’t exactly know what that means either but we were introduced to Dean as he’s figuring out the world and himself, so this is just another step on that journey.

As is par for the course with episodes like this, Dean and his friends eventually get caught with their reading material which prompts his parents to have a talk with him they’re not entirely ready for but that must happen nonetheless.

Who’s ready for some secondhand embarrassment and more than a few laughs?
