Thursday TV ratings: Grey’s Anatomy down, Ghosts premieres fair

"Pilot" -- GHOSTS is a single-camera comedy about Samantha and Jay, a cheerful freelance journalist and up-and-coming chef from the city, respectively, who throw both caution and money to the wind when they decide to convert a huge rundown country estate they inherited into a bed & breakfast--only to find it's inhabited by the many spirits of deceased residents who now call it home. The departed souls are a close-knit, eclectic group that includes a saucy Prohibition-era lounge singer (Danielle Pinnock); a pompous 1700's Militiaman (Brandon Scott Jones); a '60s hippie fond of hallucinogens (Sheila Carrasco); an overly upbeat '80s scout troop leader (Richie Moriarty); a cod-obsessed Viking explorer from 1009 (Devon Chandler Long); a slick '90s finance bro (Asher Grodman); a sarcastic and witty Native from the 1500s (Romn Zaragoza); and a society woman and wife of an 1800's robber baron who is Samantha's ancestor (Rebecca Wisocky), to name a few. If the spirits were anxious about the commotion a renovation and B&B will create in their home, it's nothing compared to when they realize Samantha is the first live person who can see and hear them. Debuts Thursday, Oct. 7 at 9:00 PM on the CBS Television Network and available to stream live and on demand on the CBS app and Paramount+. Ghosts premiered on CBS and fared pretty well for the night. A lot of other shows ticked downwards in the live TV ratings on Thursday, Oct. 7.

There are a few shows or specials that we don’t have to worry all that much about. FOX had its first Thursday Night Football showing of fall 2021, and unsurprisingly, it was the best in both the demo and total audience. It’s possible the football that meant many of the shows saw downward ticks.

Coroner was the only series to see upward ticks in both the demo and total audience. I don’t think we have to worry too much about this. Season 4 is already confirmed by CBC, and there’s no reason to think The CW won’t acquire it.

The Outpost was down in the demo by 100% to 0.0 and the audience was up 3% to 0.33 million. That was the series finale, though.

Young Sheldon up, Ghosts fair, Grey’s down in the live TV ratings

Young Sheldon was the only other show to see some upward ticks. The demo matched the demo for the previous season premiere, and the total audience was up by almost 2%. This is a good sign for a future for the series, and makes it clear that fans are still invested in Sheldon Cooper’s story.

From there, things were downhill for CBS. United States of Al Season 2 debuted down compared to the previous premiere. That’s not all too surprising though since the premiere was a series premiere. The downward ticks weren’t too bad, and they’re pretty fair for a Thursday night.

The two-episode premiere of Ghosts was also fair. It debuted with 5.42 million viewers (up from United States of Al slightly) and a 0.5 demo rating. The audience did drop in the second episode but the demo remained steady. We’ll need to see how the show stabilizes to see if the comedy will get a second season.

Bull premiered down from its previous season premiere. The show has moved nights, so this isn’t surprising, but it was down a concerning amount. It dipped 30% in the demo to 0.3. The 4.13 million viewers was the best for the timeslot, though.

All of TGIT was also down We’re not too concerned about Station 19 and Grey’s Anatomy. It’s Big Sky we’re keeping an eye on right now. We need to see this stabilize quickly and hold up against Bull and Law & Order: Organized Crime.

Speaking of Organized Crime, it was down 25% in both the demo and audience. Likewise, SVU was down 17% and 20% in the demo and audience respectively. It really does look like the football had a part to play. We’re not worried just yet, though. SVU already has another season confirmed and we’re sure to see Organized Crime renewed when it wins the demo in the timeslot.
