Supergirl season 6 episode 14: Will Lena Luthor embrace her magical abilities?
We are more than halfway through the final season of Supergirl and with the final episodes wrapping up on The CW in a matter of weeks things are really heating up for the Super Friends. But there are few going through as much recently as Lena Luthor.
After helping to get Kara back from the Phantom Zone, Lena decided it was time to finally face her past and learn about her birth mother. So she went on a trip to Newfoundland and found some unexpected information.
It turns out Lena’s birth mother, Elizabeth Walsh, was part of a magical coven. And what’s more, she passed her magical abilities onto Lena. A fact that Lena, as scientific minded as she is, is having a hard time accepting.
Will Lena embrace her magical abilities in time on Supergirl?
Lena is a scientist so naturally the concept of magic is not an easy thing for her to believe in. She wants to find a logical explanation behind everything, but sometimes there just isn’t one.
As hard as it is for her to accept, after revealing the truth about her mother to Kara it helped Lena to move forward and begin attempting to understand and master her abilities. And not a moment too soon.
Nyxly is becoming more powerful than ever now that she already has one of the magical totems the Super Friends are searching for. And given the fact that she will soon have a new ally in Lex Luthor, the Super Friends are going to need all the help they can get. And since only magic can defeat magic it turns out Lena is their best hope.
Unfortunately, while Lena is trying her best, her scientific mind is still a bit resistant. And it doesn’t help that Lena doesn’t have any real guidance with her magic. All she has in an old book that once belonged to her mother.
While Lena agrees to use her abilities to help Supergirl and the Super Friends she’s unpracticed and unfortunately initially seems to get it all wrong. She even manages to break Dreamer’s brain in the process, which was a hilarious scene but not really what she was going for.
Surprisingly, Lena gets the advice she needs from an unexpected source. William has embedded himself with the Super Friends and when he sees Lena struggling he tells her a story about his own experience with his mother’s death. He mentions how he would try to bake his mothers’ recipes exactly like she did, but it never turned out right. Only once he put his own heart into it and did it his own way did it come out how he wanted. And that advice was exactly what Lena needed to hear. It was a sweet scene and it’s a shame the show doesn’t put William to better use cause he could be a great character if they used him better.
We also get to see that Lena has developed and moved past the dark version of herself she became in Season 5. When Supergirl suggests a plan that would end up affecting the mind and emotions of a lot of people Lena is the one who objects. Given all the questionable things Lena tried to do in Season 5 it’s nice to see that her perspective truly has changed.
We need more of this on Supergirl
We need more scenes like this because sometimes it feels like Lena’s previous actions are brushed under the rug but we need to see real growth and change and atonement in order to make her forgiveness earned. I do believe Lena is a good person and I do not for a moment think she would repeat her previous actions, but we need to see more acknowledgement and atonement for them.
Part of Lena’s atonement is helping the Super Friends to stop Nyxly and Lex and anyone else who is out to hurt others. Thankfully, after William’s heartfelt advice Lena is able to get her magic to work and performs the spell to enact Supergirl’s plan. This time the Super Friends are successful and they end up capturing the next totem.
Lena’s magical abilities are still a work in progress but Lena was able to take the first step forward by accepting them, and being the genius that she is, now that she has mastered one spell it’s only a matter of time before Lena is able to master all of her abilities.
And no matter how you feel about this storyline, I think all Merlin fans can agree that it is rather nostalgic to see Katie McGrath performing magic incantations again. Let’s be honest, she makes it look good. All that’s left is for her eyes to glow gold and it’s like Morgana Pendragon has returned.
