It’s time to say hello to another reimagining of the classic horror tale Child’s Play, which began all the way back in 1988 with the original film. Eight movies later and we’re now tuning in for Chucky the TV series, airing on both Syfy and USA Network.

Chucky follows a middle schooler named Jake (Zackary Arthur), an artistic kid who comes upon a Good Guys doll at a garage sale and buys it for his sculpture made of children’s toys. Jake is an outcast and is bullied by his peers at school and his dad, Lucas (Devon Sawa).

The premiere of Chucky, “Death by Misadventure,” just aired tonight at 10:00 p.m. EST, and if you haven’t caught up yet, beware that there are spoilers for the first episode below.

Lucas is not supportive of Jake’s artistic passions and tells him he won’t make a living pursuing that dream. It’s made evident pretty early on in the premiere episode that Lucas isn’t the best dad. In fact, he could be dangerous. Later on in the episode after Jake’s cousin Junior (Teo Briones) and his uncle Logan (also played by Devon Sawa) come over for dinner, Lucas has enough and takes a bat to Jake’s sculpture, completely destroying it.

This outburst comes after Junior brings up Jake’s sexuality at dinner. Lucas denies Jake’s gay, and after he destroys the sculpture, he tells Jake to stop playing with toys.

Jake is understandably devastated and Chucky the doll sees this. He decides he wants to sell the doll, and takes it to school with him the next day in an effort to hide it from Lucas.

Spooky things start happening with Chucky at school, and Jake later receives a weird phone call from someone warning him about the doll. Chucky mysteriously shows up at Jake’s house, and when Jake checks its batteries, he discovers there are none inside. This, of course, proves that the doll is haunted.

Jake takes Chucky with him to the talent show at school later that night, which is when things start getting weirder. The doll begins talking and when Jake brings him on stage, he insults some of the students and even Jake’s aunt, Bree (Lexa Doig).

But things only escalate when Jake gets home that night, leading to Lucas’ murder.

How does Jake’s dad Lucas die in Chucky?

Jake arrives home with Chucky and sees Lucas angrily drinking. He says Jake’s teacher called about the talent show and that he’s suspended from school. Jake tries to defend himself, and Lucas yells and punches him in the face. Lucas sends Jake to his room, and Chucky decides to take matters into his own hands.

After the power goes out, Lucas heads down to the basement and starts messing with the circuit breaker and cords. Chucky then shows up and projectile vomits all over Lucas, electrifying him in the process.

Jake walks downstairs and watches his dad as he is electrocuted to death. It’s an intense scene, especially after the fight the two just had.

We then cut to detectives showing up at Jake’s house, informing him that he’ll be staying at his uncle Logan’s and asking him a few questions. We then see Lucas being zipped up in a body bag, confirming his death.

In the final moments of the Chucky premiere, Jake demands answers from the doll and we find out that he really is being possessed by the spirit of Charles Lee Ray, a serial killer who died in the 1980s. Considering this new show is a sequel to the 2017 film Cult of Chucky, fans already assumed it would be him.

Jake is now living with his aunt and uncle, and his cousin who bullies him. It’s certainly not going to be an easy ride for him, especially while dealing with the trauma of losing his father. Be sure to watch the second episode of Chucky next week when it premieres on Syfy and USA Network on Tuesday, Oct. 19.
