The Riverdale season 5 finale moved at a quick clip. As usual, it was difficult to keep up with the show from plot point to plot point, and we definitely jumped the shark come the middle of the episode, but there was a definitive reason for that leap: Cheryl Blossom.

The former queen of mean, whose soft spot lies deep within her heart where her feelings on family, love, and loyalty lie, found out some startling family history that saw her causing more than one scene in “Chapter Ninety-Five: RIVERDALE: RIP (?).”

For the entirety of this time jump era, Archie and the rest of the gang have been working tirelessly to save Riverdale as they also navigated their own personal traumas and storylines. They finally achieved their goal in the finale but, in the process, put Cheryl in a position where she felt she needed to secede once Riverdale once again became an incorporated town.

Why? Here’s what we know!

Did the Riverdale season 5 finale confirm Cheryl is a witch?

Spoilers ahead of the Riverdale season 5 finale

Since Cheryl proclaimed to Kevin that she maybe the holiest of holies in “Chapter Ninety-Two: Band of Brothers,” there’s been a question of whether or not she indeed has powers. The following episode, “Chapter Ninety-Three: Dance of Death,” confirmed that she does when the elements responded to her plea to Gaia.

However, it’s the season 5 finale that moved us that much closer to defining just what kind of supernatural being Cheryl might be given her ancestry. It was implied in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina that the Blossoms have some kind of witch lineage, but it hasn’t been brought up on Riverdale.

However, Cheryl’s ancestor Abigail invoking Satan’s name while cursing the ancestors of Betty, Archie, and Jughead has fans raising eyebrows. It seems like the show is all but saying Cheryl is indeed a witch and the old timey versions of her friends were correct in believing Abigail one, too.

The words have yet to be spoken on the show though the use of heavy foreshadowing and imagery has painted quite the picture. Cheryl, Britta, and Nana Rose were, after all, in a circle of three around a table that looked very witchy.

Nana Rose even had Cheryl read Abigail’s curse as a means of Thorn Hill starting off on another foot, one where the grounds would once again become a home to wayward girls. When she did, a cold wind blew through the house and the town, chilling the bone.

This, of course, is going to unfold into the five episode event set to open Riverdale season 6. As Hidden Remote reported previously, the sixth season is meant to be a fight against good and evil. We don’t know how that’s meant to play out on the show, but the finale clearly set the board.

Cheryl will be pitted against her friends. While her desire for an immediate formal apology to her ancestor from descendants who hadn’t even known the history she told them seemed extreme, they still left a wrong unrectified. Their ancestors pulled hers from her home, dragged her through the woods, and burned her at the stake.

Betty, Jughead, and Archie may have pushed the past from their minds, but Cheryl hasn’t and neither has Abigail given her curse was meant to dog the steps of her executioners’ descendants.

Now that there’s confirmation that a CAOS crossover will happen in the five episode event, we’re that much closer to Cheryl being declared a witch on Riverdale and it all stems from this curse.

Something witchy this way comes, Riverdale fans, and it’s finally bringing Sabrina Spellman to town. We can’t wait to see how Sabrina helps Cheryl save a member of the Blossom family using a spell that’ll require the abilities of them both.

Stay tuned to Hidden Remote for more news and coverage on the five episode Riverdale event which starts on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 9 p.m. ET.
