La Brea is one of two new television dramas that made their debut on NBC this fall. But, unlike Ordinary Joe which splits a man’s life into three different paths, La Brea brings a topsy-turvy bend to NBC’s fall TV line-up.

On a network primarily known for its procedurals, this sci-fi mystery sticks out in a big way. It’s NBC’s second crack at landing a successful genre series after last year’s Debris failed to be a big draw for the channel despite being well-received by critics.

La Brea looks to be a show fans of Manifest–another cancelled NBC genre show that’s now become a Netflix original series in its finale season–would enjoy. The premises aren’t in anyway analogous but, going off the trailer, the shows hit similar beats.

There’s a separated family, visions that slowly reveal what’s happening, a mystery at the center of the plot, and a disparate group of people who must rely on each other to figure out what’s happening and decide what to do next.

However, instead of a plane full of passengers mysteriously reappearing after disappearing for five years, it’s a sink hole that throws life out of whack for La Brea‘s characters. The supernatural isn’t quite at play in their show but time travel might be given the sink hole leads to a time when gigantic fauna were common place on Earth.

If this sounds like a show for you, new episodes air Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC. Next day streaming is available on Peacock.

The official synopsis of La Brea and the season trailer is as follows:
