Peacock, the streaming service from NBCUniversal, is home to hundreds of movies and series, and it offers exclusive programming you won’t find anywhere else. But does Peacock have live TV? The answer is complicated.
Put succinctly, the answer is “kind of.”
Live broadcasts of news, sports and late night talk shows are available on the streaming service, but you can’t watch a live stream of everything that’s on your local NBC station.
Peacock offers a hybridized form of live TV
One of the challenges with streaming services like Peacock and Paramount+ is that local television stations are all different. There is different programming that runs during the day and night, outside of morning news, primetime programming and late night talk shows.
With so many TV markets across the country, it would be very challenging (if not impossible) to customize TV offerings based on local markets. Even if they provided coverage by region, it would require contracts to be renegotiated for programming intended for the Los Angeles market, for example, that was also airing across several different counties in Southern California.
This is even more problematic for international viewers who are blocked from several features within the service because of geographic restrictions.
There are lots of live television streaming services out there that can provide live television. Peacock is a great service if you want to watch movies, watch old, new and Peacock exclusive series or if you want to watch live sporting events. Peacock was the streaming home of the Olympics, after all.
At the end of the day there are so many streaming options so you really have to weigh out what you want and what you’re looking for. It’s possible (and very likely) that you won’t find exactly what you want but you’ll be able to find something that gets close to what you’re looking for, even if that means subscribing to multiple streaming services to get what you want.
