9. A Scanner Darkly

Original Release Date: July 28th, 2006

Box Office Earnings: Unfortunately, A Scanner Darkly wasn’t a very big commercial success, netting only 5.5 million at the domestic box office. But its real value is in the cult status it has achieved since then.

Critical Acclaim: A testament to its staying power as a cerebral fan favorite film, the movie is rated higher by audiences than critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 67% critic rating versus 74% for audience. When it was released, the film was nominated for a Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form.

About the Role: A Scanner Darkly follows Phillip K. Dick’s novel, imagining a dystopian future in which 20% of the population is addicted to a powerful hallucinogen called Substance D. The film follows Bob Arctor, an undercover agent who has been tasked with finding the source of Substance D. As Bob goes deeper, he loses his grip on reality, and sinks further into a conspiracy that threatens to swallow him whole. The cast includes Robert Downey Jr, Woody Harrelson, and Winona Ryder. The film was directed by Richard Linklater.

Simply the Best: A total mind trip, A Scanner Darkly played with the very format of film, using a type of animation called interpolated rotoscope to overlay expressive graphics and animation on previously filmed material to create a colorful, unpredictable world. (See the trailer above for a dose of unforgettable visuals.) Reeves’s character is the center of the narrative, and his dedication to bringing this story to life is apparent in his fiery performance.
