8. Something’s Gotta Give

Original Release Date: December 12th, 2003

Box Office Earnings: Director Nancy Meyers earned back every cent of her 80 million dollar budget, and then some. Something’s Gotta Give earned $124.7m domestically and $266m worldwide.

Critical Acclaim: The film was popular with both critics (72%) and audiences (69%).

About the Role: While the film centers on playwright Erica Barry (Diane Keaton) and her love affair with music producer Harry Sanborn (Jack Nicholson), Reeves plays a pivotal and surprising role. When Erica and her daughter bring Harry to the hospital after he suffers a heart attack, they find themselves going gaga over a cute doctor named Julian (Reeves). While Erica’s daughter is much more age appropriate for Julian, it’s revealed that he’s smitten by Erica’s work and is very interested in getting to know her better.

Simply the Best: Even though Reeves plays a smaller role in this film, it’s very indicative of his willingness to play with expected Hollywood conventions. May-December romances may flourish on film when a young woman and an older man are the focus, but movies rarely portray a gender swapped version. Something’s Gotta Give had hottie Keanu Reeves lusting after an older woman, and everything seemed right with the world.
