Is Lawrence in the Insecure season 5 premiere?
Throughout the seasons of Insecure, we’ve seen protagonist Issa Dee (Issa Rae) go through the ups and downs of her career, her friendships, and of course, her romantic relationships. At the start of the series, she has a serious boyfriend named Lawrence (Jay Ellis), who isn’t in the best place of his life. Not being on the same page is a dealbreaker for Issa, but their initial split isn’t the last we see of Lawrence.
Lawrence has a serious glow-up as a single man, and it’s hard for Issa to ignore that. However, given their complicated history, their relationship is never an easy thing to navigate. That goes for Insecure season 5 as well.
The new season debuted tonight, and though Issa’s relationship with Lawrence isn’t at the forefront of the episode, we do get some clarity on where the two stand.
Spoilers ahead for Insecure season 5.
Is Lawrence in Insecure season 5?
As teased, Lawrence is, in fact, in Insecure season 5. He makes a brief appearance in the first episode as well, but it’s not until the final moments. The premiere follows Issa and her friend group as they attend an alumni event at Stanford University. The storyline is very much about Issa’s professional journey, as she doesn’t feel as put together as she might have thought she was.
Issa also makes a breakthrough with Molly (Yvonne Orji), and the two are able to get to a good place again. But it’s not all good news in the first episode of season 5.
At the end of the premiere, Issa is picked up by Lawrence, and they share a kind of awkward car ride. When they get to Issa’s, she breaks the news that she’s thought about their relationship, and though she doesn’t actually say they’re not going to work, it’s obvious how she’s feeling.
At this point, we’re assuming that marks another breakup for Issa and Lawrence. In case you forgot, Issa learned in season 4 that Lawrence got his ex-girlfriend Condola (Christina Elmore) pregnant, and she planned to keep the baby. Of course, this is a major life event and one that would only make Issa and Lawrence’s relationship more complicated.
As Issa and Lawrence leave a lot unsaid in the Insecure season 5 premiere, we assume they’ll need to talk through things again. Hopefully, we’ll get more of Lawrence in future episodes.
The fifth and final season of Insecure airs every Sunday night on HBO and HBO Max.
